  1. Briefly describe the classification system used for categorizing surgical wounds based on the extent of contamination. Discuss factors that influence the development of surgical wound infections.
  1. In regard to full-thickness free skin grafts:
  1. Describe the stages of acceptance of a full-thickness free skin graft.

  1. Discuss the causes of graft failure and what precautions can be taken to prevent graft failure. (6 marks)
  1. Discuss the normal process of endochondral ossification in a long bone.

(5 marks)

  1. Discuss how this process is altered in osteochondrosis. (2 marks)
  2. Discuss briefly the proposed mechanisms of pathogenesis of osteochondrosis. (3 marks)

4. Gastric dilation and volvulus is a potentially life threatening problem in the dog. Discuss the pathophysiology of this condition.

5. Describe on an anatomical and physiological level how a severed tendon heals. In relation to this, discuss how you would manage a sutured common calcaneal tendon postoperatively to maximise the chances of successful healing.

6. a. Describe the pathophysiological events which will follow the complete obstruction of the urethra of a dog with a calculus lodged immediately caudal to the os penis. (6 marks)

b. Outline the methods by which you will manage this condition in order to stabilize the dog prior to surgical intervention within your practice. (4 marks)

  1. There are many methods described for the surgical management of cranial cruciate ligament rupture in the dog. These methods can be divided into extra-articular, intra-articular and tibial plateau angle altering procedures. In the case of a 35kg Labrador retriever with a unilateral cruciate ligament rupture discuss the advantages and disadvantages of these three categories of procedures.
  1. List the types and causes of nonunion fractures (6 marks)

Discuss the treatment of a nonunion tibial fracture in a 20 kg adult dog

which was plated 12 weeks previously and is infected, unstable, and

has a gap defect (4 marks)

  1. Describe the FOUR (4) most common malignant oral tumours occurring in dogs. Include in your answer, notes on the frequency, location, treatment and prognosis of each tumour.

4. a. Describe the anatomical abnormalities that occur with Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome (4 marks)

b. Describe the clinical signs associated with this condition (2 marks)

c. Describe the surgical treatment of these abnormalities. (4 marks)

5. Write short notes (in short sentence or point form) on FOUR (4) of the following surgical procedures:

a.  Hemilaminectomy

b.  Prostatic omentalisation

c.  Colposuspension

d.  Carpal arthrodesis

e.  Arytenoid lateralisation

6. List the potential causes of pyloric outflow obstruction in dogs and cats. Discuss how you would diagnose and treat these conditions
