As of the 2018-2019 academic year, Empowerment Academy will be in its fourth year of providing educational services to the children of Jersey City. We will be offering seats for students in Kindergarten through Fourth Grade. Our expansion plan includes the addition of one grade level each year, providing opportunities for professional growth. Next year we will expand to our second campus to accommodate 4th grade.

What Makes Empowerment Academy a GREAT Place to Work

Great LEARNING If you are excited by the prospect of providing children a great education, then work at a school which is successfully doing that!

Empowerment Academy is a partner school to BelovED Community Charter School in Jersey City, which uses a similar innovative education program and that serves a culturally diverse student population. As a result, we are able you provide both a rigorous and rich learning environment.

Nationally normed Terra Nova assessments show that, on average, Empowerment Academy scholars advanced over 1.6 grade levels in learning last year. That represents a pace of learning growth that is over 60% faster than the average in America’s public schools. We have a joyful culture where kids are learning at a faster pace because we make the learning fun!

Great VISION The vision of Empowerment Academy’s trustees and school leaders encompasses more than operating a great network of charter schools; it includes a mission for Empowerment Academy to serve as a model to help improve public schools everywhere. Therefore, our trustees work with great intentionality to refine model systems that will consistently produce not only exceptional student learning and character growth, but also an environment in which teachers love to work – so educators everywhere will want to implement Empowerment Academy-like systems, benefitting all stakeholders.

Great TEACHERS We have worked with great intentionality to build a community where people care about one another, support one another, have fun, and find meaning as they work to develop scalable and sustainable system that generates exceptional teacher skill mastery and professional practice.

Great SUPPORT At Empowerment Academy, you are not an island unto yourself. You are part of a team and you are supported. For example, we provide our educators common core aligned curriculum, curricular materials, and formative assessment resources so they won’t need, after a full day in the classroom, to spend additional long hours at home developing these resources and assessments from scratch; we provide our educators more planning periods than the average district educator and time to meet with their grade-level cohorts via professional learning community. You will be observed frequently by a Head Dean, Dean of Curriculum, and Teaching Coach to really help push you to go from good to great. Plus, their doors are always open and your professional development is their top priority.

Great PD Top professional athletes constantly seek torefine their skills– and top educators do too. At Empowerment Academy, the ongoing professional development of our staff is a major school focus and is provided through school-day instructional coaching, master teacher mentoring, peer-to-peer observation and feedback, school-day collegial sharing within professional learning communities, and frequent in-service training days. Our goal is to help every Empowerment Academy educator achieve true professional mastery.

Great CAREERS Empowerment Academy is growing fast and new leadership opportunities become available each year of growth. Empowerment Academy is adding one new grade level of 120 students each year and will ultimately grow into a network of schools with several clusters of facilities (where a Primary, Upper Elementary, Middle and High School stand in proximity to one another) located in different parts of the city. As a result, your career goals can become a reality Empowerment.

Great CITIES With its top-flight restaurants, thriving arts scene, and wonderful diversity, the Jersey City/Hoboken area is well-known as a great place to work and live. Meanwhile, we are even closer to the cultural vitality of Midtown Manhattan than is Brooklyn. It’s truly a great place to live.

Great SCHOLARS Empowerment Academy’s scholars are as enormously diverse as the people of Jersey City, which is the home of Ellis Island and has for generations been the first home of successive waves of new immigrants to this country. 65% of our students qualify for the free or reduced-price lunch program, but while their families are not rich in money, they are rich in their desire for a great education and better life for their children. This positivity propels our school.

Great SATISFACTION Extraordinarily high satisfaction levels with Empowerment Academy have been expressed by our teachers, students, and parents/guardians. This high satisfaction with teaching and learning at Empowerment Academy is reflected in Empowerment Academy’s exceedingly high faculty and student retention rates. We are a community. When we are not immersed in Data Driven Instruction, you can find us enjoying each other’s company at various service events in Jersey City or at a Family Bowling Night.
