Be a Pathogen Detective

Purpose: To become more familiar with one particular pathogen that can impact the normal functioning of the human body causing disease or illness. You will be researching a disease or illness caused by a parasite. Through your investigation you will learn such things as which pathogen causes the disease or illness, prevention methods, and types of treatments used. You will construct a creative and well-organized educational brochure, such as one you would find at a doctor’s office or clinic, about your disease or parasite.

Targets Assessed:

Target 14-I can analyze how viruses, bacteria, fungus, and parasites interfere with normal body function.

Target 15- I can recognize that and give examples of microorganisms that can cause disease.

Target 16- I can know that there are a variety of medicines available to fight microorganisms (treatments, cures).

Target 17- I can recognize that vaccines help the body build immunity without causing illness (prevention).

Project Directions:

  1. Sign-up for a disease/parasite/illness.
  2. Research your disease using the resources available in class or research that you have brought in from home. Take notes about your disease/parasite on the given note sheet and additional notebook paper if necessary.

Be sure to put the information in your own words.

You must include detailedinformation about each of the three areas.

  1. Using computer paper or a piece of small construction paper, create a tri-fold brochure with the information you have researched about your disease/parasite.

Treatments

  • Are there treatments for the disease/parasite/illness?
  • What medicines are available? How do you get it?(prescription/over-the-counter)

Cures

  • Can it be cured or will a person always have it?
