Cleaning Standard

Entrances, Corridors, Stairways & Reception
Floors (Daily) / -

Notes on the Cleaning Standard

As a guide but not exclusively

Furniture

Tables, desks, chairs, cupboards, filing cabinets, storage units, telephones, and work surfaces.

Computers and Audio Equipment

Computers, computer trolleys and audio equipment should be dry dusted only. No sprays, polishes or liquids of any kind may be used. Only equipment that is switched off should be cleaned.

Domestic Appliances

Freestanding domestic appliances should not be cleaned by the Cleaner. The Cleaner will however be responsible for pulling out such appliances and cleaning both the horizontal and vertical unit surfaces and the floor exposed by the removal of the appliance. This should be carried out on a half-term basis.

In addition, fronts of fridges and dishwashers in staff kitchen areas or staff offices should be cleaned daily on the outside surfaces only, to meet the Cleaning Standard for furniture.

Desks and Tables

Papers and items left on desks should not be moved. However, dust should not be allowed to accumulate around such items. The Cleaner should liaise with ATS & Virtual School’s administrators for desks and tables to be cleared at intervals to allow for full cleaning procedures to be carried out.

Displays Boards

Should only be cleaned by arrangement with the Business Manager. Dust should not be allowed to accumulate around displays boards.

Window Cleaning

External windows are not part of the cleaning duties.

Book Shelves

The exposed surfaces of all shelves should be cleaned to the Cleaning Standard as part of the core Duties. The removal, cleaning and replacement of books may be requested.

Cleaners Cupboards

It is the responsibility of the Cleaner to ensure that such rooms are maintained in a clean, tidy and hygienic condition commensurate with the Cleaning Standard. They should be available to be inspected by the BCCF Business Manager at all times and must not be locked so as to be inaccessible.

Removal of Residual Waste

All waste from waste bins should be placed in refuse sacks provided by the Cleaner. Refuse sacks should be filled to a safe capacity, tied securely and transported to the designated waste collection areas on site.

Recycling Bins

Contents of the recycling bins should be collected and transported to the designated waste collection areas on site.

Task, Definition & Standard

HARD FLOORS

TASK Dust Control Mop

DEFINITIONUsing a suitable dust control mop or V-Sweep for larger areas, sweep the hard floors to remove all dirt, dust and debris. The mop should be covered with a clean sleeve and used in a continuous succession of strokes without lifting the head from contact with the floor.

STANDARD Upon completion the floor should be free of all dirt dust and debris.

TASKWet Mop

DEFINITIONUsing the approved mop head & bucket (either English or Kentucky) and a suitable detergent solution diluted in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations, ensure that the whole of the floor area including underneath and behind furniture and fittings around all skirting, door frames and corners are free from soil, stains or spillages of any kind. The water must be changed at regular intervals to ensure that a high standard is achieved.

STANDARDUpon completion the whole floor surface must be clean and free from smears, streaks and stains.

TASKSpray Cleaning

DEFINITIONUsing a suitable mechanical high speed polishing machine fitted with an appropriate pad or brush, spray clean the floor area with a suitable detergent solution prepared and applied to the manufacturers' recommendations. Clean a small area at a time. Whilst the floor is still damp work the machine over the area. Edges, corners and under pipework may need particular attention. If the machine is not fitted with a vacuum attachment then the floor area cleaned must be swept using a dust control mop to remove any dust or debris caused by the spray cleaning.

STANDARDThe floor surface should have a clean, non-slip reflective finish free of any dirt created by spray cleaning.

SOFT FLOORS

TASKCarpet Vacuuming

DEFINITIONUsing a suction vacuum, vacuum the whole of the floor including under all furniture and fittings, all edges, corners, skirting and door frames, ensuring that the area is then free from dust, dirt and debris.

STANDARDThe whole floor area should be free of dirt dust and debris

TASK Removal of Stains and/or Spillages

DEFINITIONUsing the correct proprietary stain removal and applicator apply to the area concerned according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Test small area of carpet for colour fastness.

STANDARDWhen complete the carpet should be free from stains and spillages. Any stains not removed should be reported to the appropriate person.

TASKCleaning of Dust Control Mats

DEFINITIONSuction clean using the appropriate vacuum equipment and attachments to free the dust control mat of dust, dirt and debris. Using a neutral detergent solution and cloth, wipe around the rubber edging to remove any remaining dust or dirt particles.

STANDARDThe mats should be clean and free from dirt, dust and debris.

TASKVacuum Door Channels

DEFINITIONUsing electrical vacuum equipment and an appropriate crevice tool remove dust and dirt from lift door channels or any other doors where bolt holes or channels allow dirt and dust to accumulate.

STANDARDThe channels/bolt holes should be left dirt and debris free.

FIXTURES AND FITTINGS

TASKEmpty Waste Receptacles

DEFINITIONRemove all the waste from bins, place in a refuse sack and transfer to a designated collection point. Ensure that the receptacle is free from dust, dirt and debris. Line all waste-bins with appropriate bin liners.

STANDARDThe receptacle should be clean and free from dust, dirt and debris. All receptacles to be put back in the correct position.

TASKWash waste-bins

DEFINITIONThe waste-bins should be wiped with a damp cloth and a solution of neutral detergent to remove all marks and stains. Any stubborn marks to be removed with an abrasive cloth or scrubbing brush. The cloth should be rinsed out at regular intervals.

STANDARDThe waste-bins should be clean and dirt free

TASKDamp wipe/Damp dust

DEFINITIONUsing an appropriate detergent diluted in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and a clean cloth, wipe all required areas and items ensuring that they are free of all dust or dirt, stains and smears. The cloth should be rinsed out at regular intervals. If large areas are involved the water should be changed regularly. Stubborn marks may need to be treated with a mild abrasive cream i.e. cream cleaner

TASKInternal Glass - Clean Glass to Doors, Furniture and Fittings

DEFINITIONUsing an approved glass cleaner and appropriate equipment remove all dust, finger marks etc. from the entire surface.

STANDARDSurfaces and surrounding areas should be left dry and free from streaks and smears etc.

TASKClean Mirrors

DEFINITIONUsing an appropriate cleaning chemical and cloth, remove all dust and marks from the surface. Use a dry cloth to polish.

STANDARDThe mirrors should be clean and streak free

TASKDust

DEFINITIONUsing an appropriate lint free cloth or dusting tool, remove all dust and fluff from paintwork, walls, ledges, doors etc.

STANDARDAll surfaces should be clean and dust free

TASKHigh Dust

DEFINITIONUsing an appropriate high dusting tool, remove dust and dirt particles from all horizontal and vertical surfaces, ledges and fittings which are above 2 metres in height, with the minimum dispersal of dust into the air.

STANDARDAll surfaces, ledges and fittings should be clean and dust free.

TASKPolish Wooden Furniture

DEFINITIONUsing an appropriate furniture polish and a lint free cloth remove all dust and marks from the furniture and buff up to a high shine.

STANDARDThe furniture should be dust free with a clear non-greasy smear free finish.

TASKVacuum Upholstered Furniture (including inside where seating can be removed)

DEFINITIONRemove all dirt, refuse and debris using electrical vacuum equipment fitted with thecorrect tool until all surface soiling is removed.

STANDARDThe upholstery should be left completely free from dust, debris and undamaged.

TASKClean Vinyl/Plastic & Wood furniture (chairs, tables, benches,cupboards etc.)

DEFINITIONUsing a mild detergent solution and a clean cloth, remove both ingrained and surface dust etc. Any stubborn marks may be removed with a soft cloth and a mild abrasive cleaner.

STANDARDAll surfaces should be clean, streak and smear free with a reflective finish.

TASKClean Metal Furniture

DEFINITIONDamp wipe all surfaces using a mild detergent solution and a clean cloth. Remove both ingrained and surface dirt and dust. Any stubborn marks may be removed with a mild abrasive cleaner or abrasive cloth.
