ROLE OVERVIEW

This position is responsible for the delivery of approved academic VET courses in Community Services on the Tiwi Islands and at Batchelor campus. This is a fulltime position, but two part-time positions may be negotiated, subject to interested applicants.

This role includes the delivery of Certificates in Children’s Services/Early Childhood Education and Care and Education Support.

Key responsibilities include:

·  teaching, student assessment, maintenance of student files,

·  development of culturally appropriate teaching and learning activities and materials;

·  liaison with remote Aboriginal communities and with industry partners as required;

·  embedding appropriate literacy, numeracy and core foundation skills into the learning design;

·  working throughout the Northern Territory is an essential requirement of the position; and

·  liaison with other training staff and monitoring of student learning outcomes in accordance with curriculum guidelines of Batchelor Institute, and ASQA standards.

KEY ROLE PROFILE OUTCOMES

Teaching & Resource Development

1. Provide teaching and learning support to students, including student work placements, and their support and follow up.

2. Prepare, deliver and evaluate workshop activities and work site requirements.

3. In cooperation with other staff develop teaching, resource and assessment materials.

4. Participate in flexible course delivery strategies.

5. Advise students on and document assessments of student performance according to the academic rules of Batchelor Institute.

Student Support

6. Liaise with tutors to monitor and support student academic progress.

7. Consult with Course Coordinator/Senior Lecturer and counsel students on their academic progress and recommend appropriate action.

8. Maintain close liaison with local stakeholders and key community personnel on student requirements and progress.

Administration

9. Assist with student recruitment, enrolment, and travel.

10. Provide regular activity plans and reports on academic activity, as required. Participate in Performance Management and Quality Assurance activities and programs.

11. Assist with work based staff orientation.

12.  Attend Faculty and Institute meetings as required, and participate in Quality Assurance activities and programs.

13.  Participate in validation, moderation of units and course monitoring.

Research & Scholarship

14.  Maintain personal professional development and assist with research and curriculum review.

Advocacy

15.  Maintain positive professional relationships with the appropriate sector and Aboriginal communities.

Other

16.  Other duties within the range of skills normally associated with this designation, as directed.

SELECTION COMPETENCIES

Key selection competencies:

1. A tertiary qualification equivalent to three (3) year’s higher education relevant to teaching, and/or a three (3) year qualification in Early Childhood/Primary Education and / or three (3) year’s experience relevant to this position.

3. Current Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE).

4. Relevant experience in delivering VET Community Services qualifications (Children’s Services and Education Support) or equivalent training programs in Indigenous Australian communities or organisations.

5.  Demonstrated capacity to work effectively and sensitively within historical, social, political and cultural environments similar to those of Indigenous Australian communities and organisations of the Northern Territory in the context of health and / or education.

6.  Demonstrated ability to contribute to the development of teaching and learning programs and resources in accordance with the relevant national training packages, responding effectively to the learning needs of adult Indigenous Australians.

7.  Demonstrated capacity to manage the associated administrative tasks related to this position, ability to be an effective member of a culturally diverse team, and work independently of direct supervision with good time management skills including computer technology and electronic communication.

8.  Demonstrated commitment to professional development and to undertake research or to develop research skills as a member of a team.

9. Must be able to undertake travel throughout the Northern Territory in a light aircraft, must possess a Northern Territory C class drivers licence with experience of driving on unformed roads, and must be prepared to stay in a range of accommodation available to the Batchelor Institute staff, including camping out.

10.  Demonstrated understanding of equal opportunities, affirmative action and quality assurance (AQTF / AUQA) principles and practices.

Desirable selection competencies:

1.  Qualifications in English as a second language or adult education qualifications.

2.  Ability to speak an Indigenous language.

Special Features of Position:

0.5 of this role involves the delivery of training under a brokerage arrangement with Complete Personnel to meet the increasing demand for training in Children’s Services/Early Childhood Education and Care to build the capacity and qualifications of those working in the early years. The other 0.5 of the role includes Education Support and Children’s Services/Early Childhood Education and Care training delivery on the Tiwi Islands and in workshop mode in Batchelor Campus.

The position involves working with existing Early childhood education and care workers in crèches/early childhood settings, Assistant Teachers in Primary schools, and may involve supporting Vet in Schools students, as required.

Work related health issues to be considered:

Travel to the Tiwi Islands will be regularly required, to be negotiated with the workplaces, key stakeholders and the communities.
