OF POSITION

ROLE OVERVIEW

To assist in the management of the operations of the Faculty of Education, Arts and Social Sciences and to participate in the preparation and delivery of VET Certificates in Indigenous Language and Knowledge Work (ILKW). Other responsibilities include associated course and student administration, professional activities and participation in research relevant to the professional area.

STATEMENT OF DUTIES

·  Initiate and develop course and subject curriculum and supporting resource materials.

·  Coordinate and conduct workshops, lecturers, tutorials, practical classes and demonstrations, involving a range of teaching and learning activities and supervision of tasks to be undertaken in the community-based component of mixed-mode delivery, work experience and field excursions.

·  Administrative tasks connected to teaching including maintaining student records and assessment, reporting on student progress, counseling students on academic matters and documenting the teaching process.

·  Maintenance of Faculty and Institute administrative procedures and policies

·  Attend Section, Faculty and Institute meetings as required.

·  Maintain personal professional activities and development.

·  Other duties as required.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Essential

Educational qualifications

1.  A doctoral or masters qualification or qualification equivalent accreditation and standing; or tertiary qualifications equivalent to four (4) years of higher Education in language and/or linguistics or a related and relevant field; and/or substantial experience relevant to the position. In determining experience relevant qualifications, regard will be given to teaching experience, experience in research, experience outside tertiary education, professional contributions and/or contributions to technical environment.

2.  Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE) or willingness to acquire.

Working with Indigenous Australians

3.  Significant relevant experience preferably within Indigenous Australian communities and/or organizations and demonstrated capacity to work within the social, political and cultural environments of Indigenous Australian communities and organization of the Northern Territory.

Communication

4.  Demonstrate capacity to communicate sensitively and effectively with Indigenous Australians, including adult students and community members

5.  Proven capacity to work effectively with others in culturally diverse teams, as well as being able to operate independently of direct supervision.

6.  Demonstrate ability to work creatively and collaboratively

Course curriculum coordination and administration

7.  Demonstrate capacity to undertake course/unit co-ordination and teaching according to the duties statement of this position

8.  Demonstrate capacity to initiate and develop curriculum and develop curriculum and learning resources relevant to the course associated with this position

9.  Demonstrate capacity to use language documentation software such as ELAN, Transcriber, Audacity

10.  Demonstrate commitment to undertake professional development activities, including research

11.  Demonstrate capacity to respond effectively to the learning needs of adult Indigenous Australian students enrolled in the courses associated with this position.

12.  Demonstrate capacity to undertake range administrative and supervisory tasks, the majority of which are connected to the courses associated with this position.

Travel

13.  Must be able to undertake travel throughout the Northern Territory as alight aero plane passenger and as a Class A licensed driver of vehicles on unformed roads and be prepared to stay in a range of accommodation available to Institute staff on remote communities, including camping out.
