DAY 1 - Basic Statistical Ideas

S1 / 9.30 -10.15 / Introduction to the course and exploratory data analysis (EDA) covering graphical presentations (dotplot, histograms); numerical summaries (mean, median, range, standard deviation); boxplots. (SA).
P1 / 10.15 -11.00 / Practical work introducing Genstat.
11.00 -11.30 / Coffee
S2 / 11.30 -12.30 / Relating the analysis to the objectives. (SA).
P2 / 12.30 -1.00 / Further use of Genstat

P2 / 2.00 -2.30 / Genstat practical work continued.
S3 / 2.30 -3.30 / Probability ideas, the normal distribution, estimation, standard errors, confidence intervals, t-distribution. (LA).

P3 / 4.00 -5.30 / Practical work on estimation and confidence intervals. Further practice on Genstat.

DAY 2 - Further Inference and introduction to Regression

S4 / 9.30 -10.30 / Ideas of a significance test: one-sample t-test, interpreting p-values, one and two-sided tests. (SA).
P4 / 10.30 -11.00 / Practical work on significance testing ideas.
11.00 -11.30 / Coffee
S5 / 11.30 - 12.30 / Comparing two samples. (LA).
P5 / 12.30 -1.00 / Practical work on two-sample tests.

P6 / 2.00 -2.30 / Practical work on regression ideas
S6 / 2.30 -3.00 / Exploring relationships. (LA).

S7 / 3.30 -4.30 / Further regression ideas: introduction to the analysis of variance (anova), meaning of R2, correlation coefficients - are they useful? (SA)
P7 / 4.30 -5.30 / Practical work on anova in regression.

DAY 3 - Introduction to Experimental Design and ANOVA

P8 / 9.30 -10.30 / The experimental game "MICE" to illustrate basic ideas of experimental design. Playing the game and simple analysis on Genstat. (SA).
S8 / 10.30 - 11.00 / Discussion of "MICE" design ideas. (SA).
11.00 -11.30 / Coffee
S9 / 11.30 -12.30 / Using "MICE" data to introduce the one-way analysis of variance. (SA).
S10 / 12.30 -1.00 / Further analysis of experimental data. (SA).
1.00 -1.15 / Feedback and completion of course assessment forms.
