The Banaras Hindu University:

The Banaras Hindu University (BHU), founded by Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviyaji in 1916, is one of the most prestigious Central Universities in the country. An autonomous institution of distinction having the Hon’ble President of India as its Visitor, BHU is the largest residential University in Asia. Being a living embodiment of such visionaries as Mahamana Malaviyaji, Dr. Annie Besant and Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, this seat of learning epitomizes a synthesis of ancient wisdom and modern scientific temper. The holistic model of education, conceived and enriched by its illustrious founder, offers refreshingly new perspectives to young minds and nurtures and facilitates their creative talent.

Faculty of Social Sciences:

The Faculty of Social Sciences came into existence in 1971 with five constituent Departments viz. Economics, History, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology and four independent Centers for interdisciplinary studies. The Centre for the Study of Nepal was added to the Faculty as an Interdisciplinary Research Centre under the Area Studies Programme of the UGC/GOI in 1976. Centre for Integrated Rural Development Programme was established in 1979. Centre for Women’s Studies and Development Supported by the University Grants commission was set up as a separate unit in 1987-88. Malaviya Centre for Peace Research was established in 1997 as an independent, interdisciplinary centre for the Faculty. Centre for the Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy was established in 2008. The Department of Political Science has a Centre for the Study of State Govt., the Department of Psychology has a consulting Centre and the Department has a Research Unit.

Faculty runs 6-Semester B. A. (Hons.) and 4-Semester M.A. Courses. Ph. D. scholars are enrolled for research in all the departments and centres of the Faculty. The Faculty also introduced two year special courses at Masters level in Personnel Management & Industrial Relation; Social Work & Public Administration; one year PG Diploma in Japanese Studies and one year PG Diploma in Conflict Management and Development.

The Centre for Study of Nepal:

The Centre for the Study of Nepal, Faculty of Social Sciences, Banaras Hindu University is established by University Grants Commission under its Area Study Programme in 1976. Initially it was devoted to the study of Nepal only. In course of time, the area of study was extended to include Trans-Himalayan region vis-à-vis Study of Nepal, to understand the Indian subcontinent in its totality. It is extending the agenda to cover the whole South Asian Region for understanding Nepal and Trans-Himalayan Region in additional larger perspective. The Centre has undertaken and organized various activities, such as special lecture, field work to Nepal, Introduction of UG and PG level courses, workshops and essay competition. The Centre has all facilities to hold such events. It has an independent building and separate Library and staff and faculty members.

The Centre has been the focal point of Nepalese politics. It has has also been acting as an active platform for continuous interaction between States and Non-State actors of India and Nepal. It has organised functions (cultural and social) and get together, meetings with the Nepalese citizens coming to Banaras or Banaras Hindu University.

Department of Economics:

The Department of Economics that came into existence in 1918 offers at presents B.A. (Hons.), M.A., Ph.D and D.Litt degrees. The Department boasts of having as its faculty stalwarts like Prof. Gyan Chand, Prof. N.J.Shah, Dr. Hans Raj Soni, Prof. B.P.Adarkar, Prof. A.K.Dasgupta, Prof. R.N.Bhrgava, Prof. D. K. Srivastava among others. At present the Department that has 09 Professors, 01 Associate Professors and 01 Assistant Professor, is headed by Prof. M. P. Singh. The Department has a separate research unit entitled to undertake research work of contemporary importance. The thrust area is regional development with an orientation of development economics and dynamic macro aspects. The department offers specializations like econometrics, environmental and resource economics, industrial economics and international business. The focus is both on theory and applied aspects of study.

The Indian Econometrics Society

The Indian Econometric Society (TIES) is a registered society under Public Societies Registration Act, formed in 1960. It is one of the oldest and largest body of professional econometricians and quantitative economists with more than 2000 members from all over India and abroad. To provide a forum for economists, mathematicians and statisticians of India and abroad; To promote development of econometric methodology and techniques.

About Varanasi:

Varanasi is one of the oldest living cities of the world with a international brand of Heritage City situated on the Bank of Holy River Ganga, famous for Lord Vishwanath, Gautam Buddha and Jainism. It is of the few places in India known for religious, cultural, educational above all heritage tourism. In the early part of February Varanasi still enjoys a winter with less certain predictability, therefore participants are advised to carry warm winter clothes for a comfortable stay. The city is on South Central Railway and the Grand Trunk Road with very good connectivity of all the three medium rail, road and air. The nearby railway stations are Varanasi Cantt, Varanasi City, Manduadih (Varanasi) and Mughal Sarai and the Varanasi City Buss Stand is just adjacent to Varanasi Cantt Railway Station. All the railway stations and bus stand are frequently connected to the Banaras Hindu University both by auto rickshaw and taxi. Since the place is a tourist hub applicants are advised to book the tickets in advance.

Aim of the Workshop:

This programme aims at imparting a thorough understanding of applied econometric tools which are extensively used in the field of applied economics research and teaching. The programme would also offer hands-on training using econometric soft ware of different programmes to equip the scholars and teachers for a better understanding of interpreting and analyzing econometric estimations and findings that are obtained using various econometric softwares. The selected sub themes from the list given below will be focused in the proposed five day workshop:

A.  Basic Issues in construction and application of econometric models related to applied economics.

B.  Multiple regression Analysis: issues, tests, specifications and application.

C.  Simultaneous Equations Models

D.  Application of Time series and Panel Data.

E.  Training and skill formation of use of econometrics for carrying empirical research (funded projects and sponsored research).

Dates to Remember:

Workshop date will be tentatively 13.03.2015 to 19.02.2015 based on the appreciation of various other activities and in consultation with The Indian Econometric Society. Last date for submission of application is 01-03-2015 4.30 pm IST. The shortlisted candidates will be communicated by 05 March,2015.

Guidelines for Registration:

v  Limited participants would be selected on first come first served basis.

v  It is open for Faculty Members, Research scholars [M.Phil and Ph.D. students] of Social Sciences and (Primarily Economics, Statistics, Commerce and Management) Related /Sister Disciplines and the policy makers / corporate personnel .

v  Prior registration is required and no spot admission is allowed and registration form should be accompanied with prescribed fees. Participants may use the hard copy of the registration form / may also submit their registration as an e-mail attachment using MS Word to / .

v  The use of e-mail is encouraged for all further correspondence and acceptance for participation will be sent to the delegates only through e-mail.

Registration Fee:

v  Rs. 2000 per delegate for faculty members / faculty scholars

v  Rs. 1500 per delegate for M.Phil and PhD research scholars

v  Rs.3000 per delegate for policy makers/corporate sector.

v  The Payment of course/ workshop fee should be made only through DD drawn in favour of the Coordinator, CENTRE FOR THE STUDY OF NEPAL, Banaras Hindu University payable at Varanasi-221005, UP. The registration fee includes workshop Kit, Lunch, Tea/Coffee.

v  The completed registration form in the prescribed format must reach the workshop Convener on or before 25th January 2015.

v  Travel and Accommodation:

v  The participants are requested to make their own travel arrangements in advance and accommodation. Those who need accommodation should intimate clearly in the registration form and pay the full cost of accommodation. However, the accommodation on the first come first served basis will be arranged on full payment of room tariff in advance in addition to the delegate fee. No TA & DA will be paid to the participants. Advance intimation about travel plan of the delegates will be much appreciated.
