Barbara & Scott Bice Faculty-Student Dialogue Fund

Thanks to the wonderful generosity of Trustee Barbara Bice and her husband Scott, funds for non-academic faculty-student interaction have been madeavailable. The funds are intended to facilitate student-professor conversations outside of the classroom with the goal of building relationships both academic and personal. Activities, which are expected to foster dialogue, can range from hosting a dinner party to going out for coffee or lunch and conversation, and may perhaps be structured around prearranged discussion topics.The committee encourages applications that involve non course-related activities.The application deadline for Spring 2016 funds is Friday, March 11at 5 p.m.The committee expects to award all of the funding for fall to those applications submitted by the March 11thdate and does not anticipate having sufficient funds to support late applications.

How to Apply

Both faculty and students are eligible to apply for funding. Applications should include information about the activity, the number of people attending, the college association of each attendee, and whether or not alcohol will be served. Submit applications online ( by email to Raina Ramirez (), or by hard copy to the Dean of Faculty’s office. The Bice application review committee (Associate Dean of Faculty Gretchen Edwalds-Gilbert, Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Academic Support Services Sonia De La Torre-Iniguez, and SAS Faculty-Staff Relations ChairTatissa Zunguze) will review applications. The spending cap per person per event is set at $25.00. Funding will be granted on a reimbursement basis only, and recipients will need to submitoriginal itemizedreceipts to Kathy Castro in the Dean of Faculty’s office. There is not a limit to how often one may apply for funding, but priority will be given to those who have not previously been granted monies.

Scripps College - Alcohol Policy

It is understood and agreed that Scripps College bears no responsibility for the purchase, distribution or effects of alcoholic beverages served or consumed at private parties, receptions or gatherings of other kinds held on the premises of or areas adjacent to the College.

While Scripps College does not encourage the use of alcohol at private functions involving the College facilities, it will grant permission for the reasonable and lawful consumption of such beverages when and only when the sponsoring party agrees to assume full responsibility in accordance with the laws of the State of California. Consequently, the sponsoring party must take reasonable care to prohibit the consumption of any alcoholic beverages by minors or other persons who might injure themselves or others as a result of such consumption. This may include, but is not limited to, the following steps:

  1. Securing the services of certified bartenders to responsibly dispense beverages as well as clean up empty cups, cans, bottles, etc.
  2. Paying for authorized security personnel to oversee the event, as required by Scripps College (handled through the Summer Conference Office).
  3. Placing alcoholic beverages in secure and controllable areas.
  4. Refusing service to anyone who is, or appears to be, intoxicated.
  5. Taking steps (such as: calling a cab, arranging a ride, notifying Campus Safety and/or the Highway Patrol, etc.) to prevent intoxicated persons from operating motor vehicles.
  6. Providing non-alcoholic beverages to guests at all times.
  7. Ending the distribution of alcohol one hour before the conclusion of the event.
  8. Informing all appropriate personnel and participants of these measures and rules.
