Appendix 1 – Questionnaire used in study

Purpose of StudyWe are conducting this survey to gather your general sentiments, attitudes, and perception of presence technologies. By presence technologies, we are referring to hardware and software that uses sensors and other data sources about your current location, activity, proximity to other people or places, and identity to provide critical business or social services. Examples of presence systems that you may have used include Google Lattitude, FourSquare and Facebook Places. The questions in this survey are not necessarily intended to determine whether or not you would use presence technologies. Rather, we are trying to understand how such systems should be designed to best support and uphold the expectations of its users.

Existing products and research prototypes collect information about you from a variety of sensors and data sources. The questions below seek to understand how comfortable you are with specific sensors and data sources collecting information about you.For these questions, assume that the information collected about you is not stored or archived. Only current information is disseminated. For example, for the GPS sensor, only your current location is collected and shared, not your location 20 minutes ago.

1) GPS, WiFi, and Cellular radios on your personal devices (e.g., phone or laptop) can be used to determine your physical location. In the table below, please rate your comfort in having these sensors collect information about you when you are physically located at the listed locations. For instance, if you are located at work, what would your comfort level be in having GPS, WiFi or Cellular positioning of your location being collected?*

2) Cameras and motion detectors can determine if a particular space or spaces are occupied and by how many people. In the table below, please rate your comfort in having these sensors collect information about you when you are physically located at the listedlocations.

3) Special software on your computer can determine if that computer is being used. The software can also determine your approximate location from how the device is connected to the Internet. In the table below, please rate your comfort in having such software run your computer and collect information about you when your computer is located at the listed locations.*

6) Presence systems have been envisioned to be useful in a variety of contexts. Below we briefly describe some combinations of people and proposed types of information these technologies could provide. Please rate how useful having a presence system would be given the type of person and how the presence data would be used.

Presence systems have many different paradigms and models for who can access the various types of information that is collected about you. The questions below seek to better understand your comfort and preferences for how access to your data is granted and controlled.

7) For each source of information collected (columns), please indicate how comfortable you would be sharing information from this source with a particular type of person (rows).
GPS or Network-Based Location (e.g. where is your current physical location) / Calendar Data (e.g. are you in a meeting) / Accelerometers and Gyroscopes (e.g. are you moving, what is your current activity) / Camera and Motion Detectors (e.g. are you in your office)

8) Assume that a presence system was in use at your workplace. If access to your presence information was initially controlled by a default setting, what would you prefer the default setting to be?

( ) Share only with your project team

( ) Share with colleagues that are co-located with you (same office building/location)

( ) Share with everyone in your organization

( ) Share with specific distribution/organizational lists of people

( ) Share no information by default

9) Assume that you chose to use a presence system in your personal life. If access to your presence information was initial controlled by a default setting, what would you prefer the default setting to be?

( ) Share with everyone

( ) Share with your broader social network (e.g., Facebook friends, Twitter followers)

( ) Share with friends of friends

( ) Share with friend lists in your personal email

( ) Share with only close friends (e.g., friends who see or interact with you often)

( ) Share with family

( ) Share with no one by default

10) Assume that you are currently using a presence system and that you have set preferences for how presence data is shared. Please briefly list situations or events that would likely cause you to adjust your sharing preferences. For instance, the start or end of a project.

In the next set of questions, the focus is more on understanding your preference with respect to the frequency and granularity of which presence data are collected and shared.

11) Sensors and data sources can be sampled (checked for their current reading) at many different frequencies. For the following sensor and data sources, please indicate the maximum frequency that you would be comfortable with presence data from this source being sampled?
Not at all / Daily / Hourly / Every 15 minutes / Once a minute / Constant sampling
GPS/WiFi/cellular location / ( ) / ( ) / ( ) / ( ) / ( ) / ( )
Software that determines if your PC is in use / ( ) / ( ) / ( ) / ( ) / ( ) / ( )

Cameras and motion detectors (e.g., are you in your office) / ( ) / ( ) / ( ) / ( ) / ( ) / ( )
12) An alternative to automatically collecting presence data at regular intervals is to have the user (you) explicitly share information through direct interaction (e.g., click on a button on your phone). Comparing the two models, what would you prefer for the collection of your presence data?

( ) Very much prefer automatic, regular collection

( ) Likely prefer automatic, regular collection

( ) Neutral, either is fine

( ) Likely prefer explicit collection

( ) Very much prefer explicit collection

13) If you were to use a presence system, what is the maximum frequently that you would allow information to be sampled about you to help others gain information about you for the following purposes/uses?*
Not at all / Daily / Hourly / Every 15 minutes / Every minute / Continuously
To locate you for discussion / ( ) / ( ) / ( ) / ( ) / ( ) / ( )
To determine the best way make contact with you / ( ) / ( ) / ( ) / ( ) / ( ) / ( )
To understand when you are engageable/available / ( ) / ( ) / ( ) / ( ) / ( ) / ( )
To know when you are in close proximity to them or others / ( ) / ( ) / ( ) / ( ) / ( ) / ( )
14) If you were to use a presence system, how frequently would you want presence information about other people to be sampled to help you gain information about others for the following purposes/uses?*
Not at all / Daily / Hourly / Every 15 minutes / Every minute / Continuously
To locate that person for a discussion / ( ) / ( ) / ( ) / ( ) / ( ) / ( )
To determine the best way make contact with that person / ( ) / ( ) / ( ) / ( ) / ( ) / ( )
To understand when that person is engageable/available / ( ) / ( ) / ( ) / ( ) / ( ) / ( )
To know when that person is in close proximity to you or others / ( ) / ( ) / ( ) / ( ) / ( ) / ( )

We will now concentrate on your level of concern when it comes to the frequency in which your presence data is accessed.

15) For the following question, assume that you are participating in a presence system. Consider also that there is a single individual that is requesting frequent access to your presence data. Below we list categories of people. For each row, assume that the individual that is requesting your presence data is a member of that category. Please indicate your level of concern that an individual from that category is frequently requesting your presence data.

16) For the following question, assume that you are participating in a presence system. Consider also that there are several individuals that are requesting moderately frequent access to your presence data.Below we list categories of people. For each row, assume that the individuals that are requesting your presence data are all members of that category. Please indicate your level of concern with individuals from that category of people requesting your presence data.

17) Under what conditions would your feelings change about how frequent your presence data is accessed? For instance, would access by a particular individual or particular type of individual elevate concern? Please describe these situations – no need to provide specific names or events.

18) Concern about frequency of access may be influenced by your current location or the activity you are engaged in. For the following states, please indicate how concerned you would be about the frequency at which your presence data was accessed. For instance, how concerned are you about how frequently your presence data is accessed when you are at work?
