2014 BAND CAMP July 28th–August 1st
Because we are at a new camp, there are a few changes as to how camp will work this year.
Before band camp can start, all students must check in with the medical officer when they check in for camp. There will also be a Good News Camp orientation, followed by a fire drill. Everyone will also need to take a swimming test. Campers may opt out of the test, but will be required to wear a band for the duration of camp signaling they can not swim. Lastly, there will be no snacks allowed in the cabins. Students may choose to bring snacks, but they will be stored by the camp staff. This is to prevent pest infestation.

CAMP and STAFF: Good News Camp is licensed with the state of Michigan. The staff is well trained. Also, there is a camp medical officer on staff to monitor medication administration for all students. While at camp, students sleep in cabins on bunk cots with mattresses (no sheets). There are flush toilets and showers with hot water. Cabins are separated by gender. An adult chaperone (associated with the band with a background check done by the school district and a Central Registry Clearance by the State of MI) sleeps in each cabin.
We are still in need of overnight chaperones. If you wish to chaperone at night, please contact Mary Connolly at 343-0743 for details.
MEDICATION: All medication must be in its original bottle and fully labeled. If it is a prescription medication, the pharmacist must label it with your student’s name, doctor’s full name, the name of the medication and the dosage directions. Please also send over the counter medications in original containers.Only the camp medical officer will distribute and monitor medication administration for all students unless approved by the staff.
MISSING HOME: The most important thing to remember about missing home is that everyone experiences it, even adults sometimes. There are many things that can contribute to missing home, such as having never been away from home before, no previous camp experience or simply being in a new environment. A visit from a parent can sometimes increase homesickness. Please relay any concerns you may have to Mary Connolly (343-0743 or 701-7921). There are some measures that you as the parent/guardian can take to help assist in the prevention of missing home:
- Involve the student with the packing and understanding what will go on at camp
- Display confidence and enthusiasm about band camp
Please remember that missing home is normal, severe cases are rare, and most kids love band camp.
VISITORS: There is no planned visiting day during camp. A visit from a parent can sometimes increase homesickness. Please relay any concerns you may have to Mary Connolly (343-0743 or 701-7921). Parents are welcome to come and must check in with camp staff upon arrival. There is a fee for any meals while visiting. Before a visit it may be helpful to check the camp schedule.
We will see you at their first performance of the year on Friday night, August 1st at 7:00pm at Good News Camp.
