Candidate Statement

I joined SWE as a freshman at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I have been actively involved in outreach at countless events and am a strong advocate of creating a future where women are no longer a minority in STEM, in particular engineering fields. I have been part of the Baltimore Washington Section for several years after moving to the DC metro area, but have become increasingly involved. I have many ideas to improve the section, and aspire to implement those ideas to encourage more member participation and maximize the benefits of having a large section.

Biographical Information

Jenny Tsao graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a BS in General Engineering, and a concentration in Manufacturing. She moved to the Washington, DC metro area to work for the United States Postal Service for 4 years as an Operations Industrial Engineer, working on efficiency in mail processing facilities. She recently transitioned into a position with the United States Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery and is now an Industrial Engineer working on process improvement in Navy hospitals.

Ana Ramekar

Candidate Statement

I’ve been involved in SWE since college days for a total of 7 years. My last two years have been the most active in hosting and organizing membership socials, and increasing BWS-SWE presence at local universities and volunteering in educational outreach events. I believe everyone aspires to life-long learning and SWE’s mission and resources are perfect for helping our members achieve both professional and personal growth. I would love for a chance to continue to host social events and networking lunches but also professional development workshops that are pertinent to a variety of fields, stages in careers and geographically accessible all our membership. I am also beginning to develop soft skills workshops for collegiate girls who want to be more confident and feel secure as they transition into the industry and start their careers.

Biographical Information

Ana Ramekar is an Aerospace Engineer at Northrop Grumman. She is responsible for structural design and stress analysis on variety of aircraft platforms performing electronic surveillance and intelligence missions. Prior to Northrop Grumman, she worked as a Flight Test engineer, Flight Analyst and Performance Engineer for Honda Aircraft Company for the first ever HondaJet. She graduated from University of Maryland with Bachelors in Aeronautical Engineering in 2010 and is currently pursuing a Masters in Aeronautical Engineering.

Kate McGuire

Candidate for Vice President Outreach

Candidate Statement

Kate is currently the Director of the Baltimore Region for the non-profit organization Science Olympiad. Science Olympiad is the largest national science and engineering “hands on” competition program for grades K to 12. She has served as vice president of outreach for the Society of Women Engineers-Baltimore/Washington Region for 2 years, which engaged 1500 girls with outreach events. She has been thrilled to learn from the experienced SWE outreach experts, support outreach leaders’ events, the launch of a new middle school activity kit (Techbridge), develop more collegiate liaisons and events, and initiate more outreach events in the Baltimore area. She hopes to continue to make it easier for the outreach leaders to do what they do best, to help recruit more SWE outreach volunteers, and to expand participation from companies that are involved in SWE currently.

Biographical Information

Kate McGuire is recently retired as a Senior Director of Engineering at Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems. She has over 30 years’ engineering experience in technical product development, strategy and management. Her product background includes radars, space sensors, helicopter sensors, submarine power systems and night vision goggles. She has worked closely with the FAA, the Army, Navy and Air Force to provide sophisticated, affordable products that keep our soldiers and our nation safe. She graduated with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana and a masters in management from Johns Hopkins University.

Jessica Renn

Candidate Statement

Jess has been a member of the Baltimore-Washington Section (BWS) of SWE since 2012. Her experience as Section Representative and E-Communications chair have allowed her become familiar with the activities and procedures of BWS and Region E, and as Treasurer she has become familiar with the financial management of the section.

Biographical Information

Jess Renn is a Technical Project Lead for Booz Allen Hamilton in Central Maryland, where she leads modeling and simulation efforts that provide analysis to help senior leaders make better informed decisions about planned IT enterprises. She has a BS in Chemical Engineering from Lafayette College (2005) and a PhD in Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering (ChemBE) from Johns Hopkins University (2010). Previously, Jess served as president of the Lafayette College chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) and helped organize the AIChE Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference hosted by Lafayette. As a graduate student, she served as chair of the ChemBE department’s Graduate Student Liaison Committee, and worked with fellow graduate students, department staff and professors to organize department recruiting weekends and re-write Teaching Assistant requirements.

Chelsea Powell

Candidate for Secretary

Candidate Statement

I am interested in becoming more involved in the Baltimore-Washington Section by serving as the Secretary. As an undergraduate at Virginia Commonwealth University, I was active in several student organizations including the Society of Women Engineers, and Tau Beta Pi. I served as the VCU SWE section president, and worked with other students and engineering professors to increase the section's presence on campus. Since graduating from VCU in 2012, I have continued to stay active in SWE and other STEM outreach activities. I served as the secretary for the Central Florida section and helped with planning the 2013 Region D Conference. After relocating to the DC area last year, I have attended several BWS SWE events and look forward to getting more involved in the coming year.

Chelsea Powell attended Virginia Commonwealth University, graduating in 2012 with a BS in Biomedical Engineering and Mathematical Sciences. She worked for NAVAIR in Orlando, FL as a Systems Engineer developing technical specifications for aviation training solutions. In 2014, she relocated to the DC area and joined Accenture Federal Services as a Technology Consulting Analyst. In this position she is assists in coordinating and executing the Customer Acceptance Test effort for the United States Postal Service's commercial mail system.

Kristin Westover

Candidate Statement

Kristin has been a member of SWE since joining at Virginia Tech in 2006, but has become more involved since graduation. Since joining the Baltimore Washington Section in 2009, Kristin has served on the Executive Committee with various positions and roles.

Biographical Information

Kristin is a civil engineer for Engineering Consulting Services (ECS) where she works in the repair and restoration division for existing buildings. Working primarily on commercial buildings, Kristin assists property managers and owners in investigation and evaluation of building aspects such as roofing, waterproofing, and facade repair. Kristin earned her degree in civil engineering from Virginia Tech in 2008.

Sue Parsons

Candidate Statement

Sue is a Fellow, Life member of SWE. Since joining SWE in 1983, she has served in almost all officer positions at the local level, as secretary and deputy director at the region level, and was on the Editorial Board for the SWE magazine for seven years, three of them as chair. She is a member of the Baltimore-Washington Section and serves as a Leadership Coach for Region E.

Sue is a contracts director at CGI Federal Inc., where she manages government contracts for the National Security & Defense Programs Business Unit in Fairfax, VA. She began her career in aerospace engineering, working for McDonnel Douglas Corp/Douglas Aircraft Company and Northrop Grumman, and has spent the last 11 years in contracts management. She has a BS in Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics from the University of Minnesota and earned her MBA from California State University, Long Beach.

Angela Martin

Candidate Statement

SWE experience - I joined SWE in 2008 when Society Conference was in Baltimore. I have heard about SWE but never knew anything about the organization. I recently decided to find out more about SWE and have started to attend BWS meetings and participate in the various outreach programs. In 2009 I participated in the BWS scholarship judging. I want to continue the growth and inclusion of more women engineers in SWE-BWS through programs and activities for all members.

Biographical Information

I graduated from the University of New Mexico in 1970 with a BS in mechanical engineering. I worked for General Electric in Burlington, VT, for 3.5 years as a mechanical design engineer. In 1974, I joined Westinghouse Electric Corporation (now Northrop Grumman Corporation) as a mechanical engineer in the Oceanic Division and then in the Electronic Systems Division at BWI. I received my Masters in Engineering Administration from George Washington University in 1982. I work in electronic packaging design department at Northrop Grumman and am currently an Advisory Engineer in the High Frequency Module department. I am married to Sam Martin (who is enjoying his new BMW) and have 2 grown sons, Christopher (2nd year resident in Urology Surgery at Scottsdale Mayo Clinic) and Andrew (college student at Towson University).

Sandra Hyland

Candidate Statement

Sandra is a SWE Fellow and a Life Member. She has served as section secretary section representative, and president of the Baltimore-Washington section and Region E secretary. She served on the editorial board of SWE Magazine, the SWE nominating committee, and chaired the SWE bylaws committee. She currently serves on SWE’s ethics committee.

Sandra is a materials and manufacturing engineer with over 20 years of experience in semiconductor manufacturing. She has a BS in electrical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a PhD in materials science from Cornell University.

Candidate Statement

I've been continuously involved in SWE since my freshman year in college when I joined the Society in 1988. SWE helped me develop and attain the personal and professional qualities I have today and encouraged me to continue in engineering. The past few years I returned to section activities after serving the society as the Region E Governor for 4 years. I feel I can represent the section members and their ideas at Region meetings and the National Conference. This can also be demonstrated by the fact that I have traveled to many Regional Conferences and 21 National Conferences. As Section Representative I hope I can also generate more interest and participation in the Section from our members.

Biographical Information

Andrea Stenberg graduated from the University of Maryland with a BS in Mechanical Engineering in 1991. She worked for CACI Inc. in Arlington, Virginia for 5 years as a reliability engineer and then at Cable and Wireless in Tysons Corner for 4 years as a CM manager. Her last position was with IBM working on the IRS account revamping their customer account data engine for 10 years. She is currently a consultant to IBM on the IRS CADE account working for the Aspen Group. Andrea, her husband, John, and their 2 daughters, Julianne and Katherine, live in Germantown, MD.
