Baltic Tour Schedule

The CIDD Committee is grateful for your cooperation in hosting the Baltic Debate Tour.

The attached (or less dressy version below) is based on the best information to-date. I hope we can go ahead with the tour with as few changes as possible. Plane tickets have been purchased. If I have miscalculated and changes must be make, let me know as soon as possible. Most connections are comfortable. There are a couple cases where it helps to use airports in the region necessitating a drive to pick the debaters up. When there are two stops with one airport connect the first host will be responsible for picking the team up and the second host will see they make their next flight.

When possible I have tried to split weekends to even out the responsibility of hosting for those time periods. Hosts should be sensitive that occasionally the team will need time to do laundry and attend to personal needs. There will also be times when the team will appreciate some private time when no official events are scheduled. They, of course, also be appreciate of social events, sightseeing, and working hard most of the time.

The delegation from the Baltics composition is three women. Hosts are responsible for housing, meals, and entertainment expenses when they are visiting. Typical housing is at hotels or other university guest quarters. When we toured the Baltics some housing was with students and families. I know we often appreciated that more than formal accommodations. My expectation is that they will not mind staying with students or graduate students as appropriate. Use you judgment and I expect they will be fine.

NCA will invoice you for the hosting fee shortly after the tour is complete. You'll note in the line-by-line below if I have your official address. If I do not or do not have it correct, I would appreciate you letting me know. I would also appreciate local phone numbers so they know who to contact if arrangements get altered (weather, etc.). CIDD is providing some spending money for our guests but not enough to cover their local entertainment expenses (e.g., admission to attractions)

The students who are traveling to the US are Liina Naaber (Estonia) (Age 21) (), Evija Rudzite (Latvia) (Age 21) (), and Jurate Motiejunaite, Lithuania (Age 24) (). I have solicited a short biography which you can use for publicity and will forward that information when I have it. Also I have asked for electronic pictures which I will distribute. The picture here (and attached to the e-mail) is a picture of Jurate which I have from last summer's tour.

TOPICS: The programs can take several forms. Some will want a debate while others will prefer panels. Some will want to do both (panels with Q&A may be particularly appropriate for class visits) Remember also that Eastern Europe studies folks might profit from the visit. The students from the Baltics are familiar with various forms of debate. Each has extensive experience with Parliamentary debate as practiced at the Worlds. They are practiced in getting a topic announced shortly before the debate. They also have experience with Karl Popper debate which is essentially policy debate with three person on a team. The three divide where one debater takes each constructive and the third is the rebuttalist. Explanations of the format can be found at http://www.Idebate.org/ (the webpage of the International Debate Education Association--part of Open Society). I expect they will be comfortable with various speech times depending on your program needs. I will be contacting them for topic suggestions (and welcome your suggestions), and I expect with so few stops you can negotiate a specific topic with them directly. Increasingly, with the ease of electronic contact the tour participants are in-touch with hosts, via prior hosts, as the tour unfolds. The country directors are also points of contact to discuss programs. Each is a great person and I imagine open to your needs. Lativia: Andris Sudmalis () [Latvia director is Ineta Dreze but correspondence can be directed to Andris; Lithuania: Virginija Paksiene (); Estonia Katrin Viru ().
