2.SEASON

3.COMPETITION

3.1Each competition will have eight (8) competitors (one each from the member schools).

3.2Each competition will begin with a two pool round robin event with each match being a single game to 21 points for Bantam, Midget and Juvenile. Score is capped at 30.

3.3Following the round robin portion of the competition, the top two finishers from each pool will advance to a best of three match, with the top finisher in each pool playing the second place finisher in the other pool. The two (2) losers of the Semi Final games will play a best of three to 21 points to determine third place winner. The two (2) winners will play best of three to 21 points for to determine second place and the County Champion(s). Each game will have a cap of 30.

3.4Shuttlecocks for tournament play: Yonex Mavis 300, yellow shuttle, green band.

4.RULES

4.1The current playing rules of the ASAA Badminton will be used.

4.2The common playing rules are summarised below:

4.2.1STARTING PLAY

Side winning the choice with either a spin of the racquet or by hitting the bird up shall have the option of:

i) serving

ii)not serving

iii) choosing ends

The side losing the toss shall then have choice of any alternative remaining.

4.2.2FAULTS

It is a fault:

i) if in serving, shuttle is higher than server’s waist at the point of contact with the racquet or if any part of the head of the racquet is higher than any part of server’s hand holding the racquet.

ii)if in serving, the shuttle falls into the wrong court or falls outside the service court.

BADMINTON HANDBOOK – Revised June, 2015 - Page 1

iii)if in serving or receiving, player’s feet are not in the service court until service is delivered. (NOTE: player may not move until service is delivered.)

iv)if either in service or play, shuttle falls out of the court, passes through or under the net, or fails to pass the net, touches the roof, walls or person or dress of a player or other permanent apparatus such as basketball nets.

v) if shuttle in play is struck before it crosses to striker’s side of the net.

vi)if, when shuttle is in play, player or his clothing touches the net or supports.

vii)if shuttle be hit twice in succession by the same player or by player and his partner successively.

4.2.3DOUBLES PLAY

See attached PDF file.

4.2.4GENERAL

i)If in service the shuttle touches the net and is otherwise good, it does not invalidate the stroke. It is treated as a regular serve.

ii)If a server in attempting to serve misses the shuttle, it is NOT a fault.

BADMINTON HANDBOOK – Revised June, 2015 - Page 1

iii)It is a fault if bird is slung or carried over the net (rests on strings of racquet).

5.ETIQUETTE

The success of the badminton program depends more on this aspect of the game than any other. All players must be familiar with it and apply it with scrupulous honesty when playing.

5.1The server always calls the score before serving. If the opposing team does not agree, it should be settled between them before playing that point.

5.2The player nearest the bird, upon landing on his side of the net, makes the call of “in” or “out” providing only that he has actually seen the bird land. If he has not and cannot therefore make an honest call, he may refer to his partner.

If ever there is doubt, e.g., a player saw the bird land and was not sure whether or not it landed “in”, then the doubt must be given to the opponent and the call should be “in”.

5.3 The players on court must not seek assistance with calls from coaches, other players, or spectators. An obvious disagreement is resolved by a re-serve. If there is obvious dishonesty on the part of other players, then for that time you must unfortunately accept it and report it subsequently to your coach.

5.4 If a controller has received numerous complaints concerning illegal play and/or dishonesty about a particular team from the coaches, the controller may appoint a neutral coach to act as an official for that team. The controller should talk to the team involved after the first complaint and give them a warning. However, if that particular team still continues to disregard the warning, then the game would be forfeited and the win would be awarded to the opposing team.

5.5 Players shake hands at the net upon concluding their match.

6.GAME PROCEDURES

6.1Games will be played on the first available court as their game is called (see attached rotation of games)

6.2Do not rally for serve, rather you should spin the racquet or hit the bird up.

BADMINTON HANDBOOK – Revised June, 2015 - Page 1

6.3Winning team will report the score to the recorder.

6.4One good bird per court will be permitted. If a change is required for a game, it should be accomplished during the warm-up period whenever possible. The bird will be exchanged by the tournament controller.

6.5Some other points to remember:

6.5.1If you are not on the court when your game is going to start, the tournament controller will determine if the game is forfeited.

7.TEAM COMPOSITION

7.1All grade teams will consist of one (1) girl’s doubles, one (1) boy’s doubles, one (1) mixed doubles, one (1) girl’s singles, and one (1) boy’s singles.

BADMINTON HANDBOOK – Revised June, 2015 - Page 1

Note:i)No player may participate in more than one category.

8.PLAYER REGISTRATION

8.1Players must be registered before commencement of play in the tournament. One copy of the team list must be prepared, and sent in to the host school by the determined date.

9.AWARDS

9.1The winning individuals in each division will receive a gold medallion, silver and bronze medallions will also be awarded at the end of their games.

9.2There will be three banners for badminton in the COLJHAA league each season. One banner awarded to each division: Bantam, Midget, and Juvenile ( gr. 7, 8, 9)

Points are only accumulated during playoffs. Every 1st place earns 5 points, 2nd place earns 3 points, 3rd place earns 2 points, and 4th place earns 1 point

10.CHAIRPERSON DUTIES

10.1 Order medallions for the winners (24 Gold, 24 Silver, and 24 Bronze)

10.4Revise the handbook as needed after the final meeting

BADMINTON HANDBOOK – Revised June, 2015 - Page 1

11.RESPONSIBILITES OF COACHES

11.1Before the Tournament

11.1.1Each coach should spend a proportion of time with the players in reviewing the common situations and rules summary included in the handbook.

11.1.2Each coach is expected to ensure that all players are familiar with and understand the general tournament and game procedures as outlined in the handbook.

11.1.3Finally, before tournament play commences, each coach must insist that besides being familiar with the rules and procedures, each player is aware of and observes the spirit and etiquette of the game of badminton. Behaviours such as these are vital to the success of the tournament. The players must believe in and act upon the premise that while the rules of the game are important, the rules of honest and good sportsmanship are more important still.

11.2During the Tournament

11.2.1Coaches are responsible for getting the correct players on the correct court and ensuring that players know which game they are playing.

11.2.2Coaches must not get involved during the game either by coaching or advising on calls. Their contact with the players must be restricted to encouragement only. If there is a real problem on a particular court, then both coaches together may endeavour to solve it. However, no coach may act unilaterally.

11.2.3Coaches must remember that during their duty as controller, their main responsibility is to keep the tournament going rather than to work with his or her players. If it is discovered that a team or teams are playing or have played inadvertently in a wrong game, that result will be scrapped and the correct games played after the end of the scheduled games.

11.2.4Coaches must insist that their players do not go into the halls of the school and practise.

11.2.5 Coaches must ensure that their players respect the school in which the tournaments are played (changing rooms, etc.).

12.RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE TOURNAMENT CONTROLLER

12.1During the Tournament

12.1.1Order badminton birds: 3 tubes of Yonex Mavis 300 green band yellow

birds.

12.1.2Announce the games to be played on each court.

12.1.3 Get the next set of games underway.

12.1.4 Record the results on the chart.

12.1.5 Send results to the badminton chair
