BACK TO SCHOOL MEANS BACK TO WORK

August means two things at Fayette Academy- students return to class, and Viking basketball players return to the court and the weight room.

Last week as school resumed, so too did offseason training and weight lifting as the Vikings continue preparing for the upcoming 2015-2016 season.

Coach Morgan added, “Our guys came back to school this week with great attitudes and a great work ethic. We are excited to get back to lifting, conditioning, and playing basketball.”

The team is hitting the weight room several times a week, working hard to improve footwork, speed, and leaping ability, and of course playing pickup basketball early and often.

“I want to get in the gym as often as possible,” said newcomer Jorres Nelson, a Junior Forward. “I really want to get in better shape and get on the Vertimax several times a week.”

VIKINGS RED HOT THIS SUMMER

Fayette Academy Boys’ Basketball was almost as hot this summer as the spiking temperatures outside.

Viking squads went a combined 11-4-1 this past June, and with notable improvement across the board and some added depth on the roster, enthusiasm about the upcoming 2015-16 season is on the rise.

Soon after resuming practice June 1, the Vikings hosted over a dozen area schools including Northpoint Christian, Memphis Home Education, Tipton-Rosemark Academy, and Marshall Academy for four play days June 10-18.

The Varsity squad, which won only 5 games all of last season, went 5-2-1. And the JV team boasted a 6-2 record, which culminated in a game-winning 3-pt shot as the fourth quarter buzzer of the final game of summer sounded.

Fayette Academy heads into dead period with some added confidence and a sense of accomplishment the program has not known in almost two seasons.

“I think we got a glimpse of how good we can be when everybody goes hard and makes plays,” said Senior Guard Travis Reed. “We just need to get everybody back together in the fall and keep moving forward.”

Weights, conditioning, and open gym will resume with the start of school in August.

Coach Morgan added, “Summer is never perfect, but we had a pretty good one. Practice was very productive, and attitudes and work ethic were strong. This summer was so much fun.”
