POLITICO: Nelson: Lawmakers must take action on drones in FAA bill

Expect lawmakers to have significant say regarding drone safety regulations in the coming months, Sen. Bill Nelson said today.

Nelson, the ranking Democrat on the Commerce Committee, took to the Senate floor this afternoon to warn of dangerous - and possibly deadly - consequences if Congress doesn't do its job regulating drone safety in the upcoming FAA bill.

"We're going to have to address the issue of drones because we have had now a number of near misses," Nelson said, citing a growing number of close call collisions between drones and aircraft as more consumers get their hands on the unmanned systems.

"Obviously the government is going to have to get into it one way or another ... I don't have the answer but in the next two months, as we're getting ready on the FAA bill, we're going to have to come up with some answers," he added.

Current FAA law expires March 31 but the Commerce Committee has yet to take action on its bill, deferring to the House to move first. The House Transportation Committee is expected to mark up its reauthorization in early February.

But while Nelson did forecast an ominous future for air safety sans congressional action, he wasn't totally down on drones.

"As a matter of fact, I can't wait until they develop the drones which they are testing right now, that I can sit on and that I can go from point A to point B and avoid the red lights and the traffic jams," he said.
