Autumn Newsletter 2016

Due to regular updates on email and facebook, the newsletter is shrinking and is now mainly a list of forthcoming activities with particular achievements and a few reminders.Organisers’ contact details are on the attached list along with STPC bank details for transfer payments. The Autumn programme is packed with week-end rallies some suitable for older, experienced members and others for younger or novice members. You will notice that prices of rallies have increased slightly as without an increase for 5 years the costs have caught up and overtaken!

ST members continue to do well at competitions inside and outside of PC in fact too numerous to mention here!

At the PC Championships at Cholmondley Castle in Cheshire we only had a senior Care team this year of Chloe Slater, Bethany Dreher and Lucy Willamett. Although they improved their score on last year they did not get into the rosettes. However, Angel Brooks did extremely well to come 3rd in the national artist competition with a painting of her horse, Furgie, in winter. All the finalists’ paintings were exhibited at the Championships and Angel’s looked amazing.

At the PC Tetrathlon Championships Hannah Cox finished 10th and Chloe achieved a maximum ride score of 1400 (clear in the time) over the 1.10m championship course.

In the first ever Grassroots Regional Finals the dressage team of Jessie Sread, Lucy and Niamh tried hard and achieved some good scores. Well done to all!

Please offer to help out when you see a need or are asked. The PC movement runs on volunteers. A big thank you toall helpers and venue hosts.

Camp

This was an innovative year as the Cottesmore joined us and we ran a small adult camp for the first time. Unfortunately numbers were severely down in mini camp with only two rides instead of the usual four. It took some time for the Cottesmore to get used to our way of doing camp but their presence doubled the numbers and consequently gave a more active feel to camp.Jake Rollingspresented the Mini Boys Trophy which he won in 2015 to this year’s winner, Jonathan Rolley. Ella Rollingswon the Mini Girls Trophy. Evie Smithwas a deserving winner of the Main camp best overall trophy. Abigail Norbury led the winning troop. Niamh Ryan won the senior stable management prize with Abigail as runner up. Jake won the best overall junior with Maisy Elliott taking the junior stable management prize and Saskia Bexon the runner up prize. Some new main camp parents were rather nervous e.g. we couldn’t get them to leave, but they had nothing to worry about as ponies and children were fine!

There is a camp re-union rally on Sunday January 8th

Progress Prizes for 2016

The committee will decide on who the above will be awarded to. If you have anyone you would like to nominate then please do so along with a few words as to why you think they deserve the prize. Nominees need to have been members for at least 2 consecutive years and have not won a major prize at Camp 2016. The nominations and winners will be announced at the Barn Dance. Would last year’s winners pleasereturn the shields by either getting them to a committee member or by bringing them to the Barn Dance and re-presentingthem. The categories are mini, junior (11 – 15yrs) and senior.

Hunting will start again soon and South Trent members are often seen with various Bloodhounds e.g. Burne, Four Counties, Readyfield, and the Quorn, South Notts and Atherstone Foxhound Hunts. Details are available on their respective websites or through ST committee members. If you do not have an adult to accompany you out hunting get in touch with someone who goes so you are not on your own and of course have a pony that is sensible in company. Look out for the chance to go on hound exercise or fun rides which are much slower and will get you used to riding in a large group. It will improve your independent riding skills tremendously!

Membership

The cost of membership is rising by £2 to £72 for 2017. Renewals can be paid from January to February 28th. If you know anyone wanting to join then advise them to do so from September as they will get up to 17 months membership for the price of 12! Lapsed members i.e. not been a member for a year or more pay a higher fee if rejoining between September and December but the normal fee if re-joining from January onwards.

Remember, in order to be in area and substantive teams, compete in the Dengie area and maintain insurance cover you must renew by February 28th.

There is a rally voucher for anyone who recruits a new member or encourages a lapsed member to re-join.

Rally Reminders

  1. If your child(ren) is just-off or still having difficulty steering or controlling their pony in certain situations please ensure there is an adult competent with handling ponies available at all times to assist the rider. The instructor cannot be expected to lead a pony while teaching the rest of the ride.
  2. Rally organisers’ contact details are on the separate Organisers document.
  3. A rally marked as “for all” means just that where applicants will be put into groups of similar ability/experience/height of horse etc. However, depending on the applicants you may not be in your perfect group but all our instructors can manage mixed groups so you should still have a good experience. Minimum group size is 4 to make a group/ride run with a minimum of 2 groups required to make the rally run. Remember to let the organiser know of any special requests when booking in e.g. travelling with someone else so would prefer adjacent times, sharing a pony, need a late time as driver working an early shift etc. If special requests cannot be met you will be informed by the organiser. Special requests can of course, alter the mix of the groups.
  4. Park neatly and considerately and do not feed hay on the outside of your vehicle. Please take droppings and rubbish home with you.
  5. Some members feel unsure about which ralliesare suitable for them. If in doubt ask the organiser
  6. Usually rallies are for 1 hour so you will need to check your time, given out by email or text generally 3 days beforehand.
  7. Cancellation fee - if you cancel after 8pm the Monday before a week-end rally you will still be charged 50% of the advertised fee as venues and instructors will have been confirmed by then i.e. will have to be paid.
  8. After attending and paying for 5 rallies you will receive a rally voucher worth up to £10.
  9. Dress at rallies should be smart casual and be indicative of the weather e.g.STPC sweatshirt over white shirt with collar and PC tie or STPC polo shirt and light colouredjodphurs. Tagged hats and safe footwear are essential. Hair must be tidy and no ear rings or facial jewelry.Rain suits, the sort you would muck out in, are not allowed for riding. New hats can be tagged at most rallies. As many of our rallies are at public venues remember you are representing STPC and as such you should be smartly turned out, considerate and respectful.

Clothing

There is some easy to wear, bespoke South Trent clothing available from A list is attached. Please do not use any other supplier so the uniform remains consistent. Branch colours are dark green with red. It is great to be able to identify South Trent members when out and about by their smart appearance. For new members a sweatshirt is essential as it can be worn at virtually every branch activity.

Hat silk £12available from the DC

Saddle cloth £26 plus £4 embroideryavailable from Snaffles Saddlery (flyer attached).

Spurs

The most contentious dress item/artificial aid in PC! The PC rule is that a member must have passed B test riding or have their DC’s permission. I will sign the membership card giving permission to members without B testif they

  • areriding at B test standard endorsed by a B test instructor/examiner or BHS/BS/BD/BE equivalentcoach
  • are 18+
  • ask for a one-off with reason or
  • a PC instructor supports their requestwith reason

At rallies, training or camp members over 12 years can try using spurs if they think it will help their problem as long as the instructor agrees. In many such cases the effect of spurs does not solve the problem.
