Automotive and Equipment Mechanic

General Purpose Statement

This position is responsible for maintaining Department equipment, vehicles/apparatus, and tools by repairing, troubleshooting and performing preventative maintenance. This includes performing and coordinating work on the District’s Engines, Ambulances, Brush Trucks, Staff/Command vehicles, and all fire/rescue vehicles/equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide initial inspection of equipment, vehicles/apparatus, and tools; and diagnose mechanical defects. Prepares detailed cost estimates and makes recommendations regarding feasibility of major repairs.
  • Provide instruction and mentorship on District’s driver/operation programs for all employees and volunteer staff
  • Interpret work orders to identify the nature of reported problem and determines the exact nature and cause
  • Maintains and adequate inventory of necessary parts and supplies to meet the most common needs of District equipment and vehicles/apparatus: orders supplies, parts and materials, following purchasing Standard Operating Procedures
  • Inspect and certify equipment in accordance with State, Federal and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards
  • Conducts and/or coordinates annual re-certification of pump and hose tests
  • Works independently to plan and schedule work to keep equipment ready for service. Coordinate work efforts to get the needed work done in an effective and timely manner
  • Ensures that District fleet and facilities are properly equipped and in safe working condition for efficient operations
  • Assists the Fire Chief in the design, specifications, planning and purchasing if District equipment and vehicles/apparatus
  • Maintain related records and files for the maintenance and repair of department equipment, vehicles/ apparatus and tools
  • Properly disposes of petroleum and other regulated hazardous waste materials
  • Provides emergency field assistance to disabled vehicles/apparatus and equipment, to determine maintenance and repairs needed; to pick up parts and/or supplies
  • Performs minor fabrication
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of operations, maintenance and repair of various equipment, vehicles/apparatus and tools
  • Knowledge of the National Fire Protection Association Standards for Fire Apparatus
  • Knowledge of diesel and gasoline motor repair and maintenance
  • Knowledge of light, medium and heavy-duty emergency vehicles
  • Knowledge of District locations, equipment and supplies used on all district vehicles/apparatus
  • Knowledge of pertinent Federal, State and Local laws, codes and regulations
  • Knowledge of District policy and standard operational procedures
  • Ability to test and maintain emergency vehicle radio, siren, audio, and lighting systems
  • Ability to analyze emergency equipment and vehicle/apparatus issues and develop appropriate courses of action
  • Ability to keep your hand and arm steady while moving your arm and while holding your arm and hand in one position
  • Ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects
  • Ability to inspect, maintain and repair equipment, vehicle/apparatus and tools
  • Ability to respond to requests and service
  • Ability to prepare and present information and re-certification programs
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Skilled in repair equipment, vehicles/apparatus, and tools
  • Skilled in watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure equipment and vehicles/apparatus are working properly
  • Skilled in report writing, driving, and use of computer, telephone, cell phone, two-way radio, copy machine, fax machine, and calculator

Minimum Qualifications

A high school diploma or equivalentwith a minimum of five (5)years experience, preferably with previous experience in mechanic/emergency vehicle technician capacity.Must possess the following:

  1. Valid Colorado Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement (or ability to obtain within 3 months or employment)
  2. Department of Transportation Air Brake Inspector certification
  3. Automotive Services Excellence Certification
  4. Emergency Vehicle Technician F-1 within the first year of employment and F-2, F-3, and F-4 within the prescribed time period as set by the supervisor

  • Driving: Must be able to operate vehicles/appatratus in the normal course of duties

  • Computer equipment: Personal computer, laptop computer, tablet, Microsoft Office, diagnostic software, and other software used in the profession and department
  • Mechanicalequipment: Tools – testing equipment, gauges, specialty wrenches, diagnostic computers/readers, calipers, blow torches; radios and pagers; district vehicles, apparatus and equipment
  • Language skills: Reads, interprets, and analyzes technical documents, codes and regulations, and professional journals; writes reports, business correspondence, procedures, and proposals; presents information and responds to questions individually and in small or large groups
  • Mathematical skills: Performs mathematical calculations utilizing basic mathematical calculations and formulas
  • Reasoning ability: Applies the principles of logic, scientific thinking, and mechanic judgment to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems using multiple, complex abstract and concrete variables in order to collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Physical activities: sit, walk, stand, bend, stoop, reach, climb, carry, crouch, twisting and lift for short to long periods of time daily
  • Lifting: May lift/carry and push/pull up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 75 pounds
  • Vision and hearing: Must be able to read paper and electronic documents. Must be able to differentiate colors and shades of color, hear sufficiently to converse with others and participate in meetings with large and small groups
  • Exposure to environmental conditions: May be exposed to heat, cold, noise, smoke, water, odors, fumes, traffic, vibrations, height, electrical hazards, grease/oil, and dust/dirt

Hours and Work Schedule

This is a non-exempt position that includes work during day, with occasional evening and weekend work.
