SYLLABUS:

AUTO SERVICE TECHNOLOGY

(Advanced Auto Technology)

I. PURPOSE: For the serious student who is considering a career in the automotive field or just wants to be able to do most repairs to their vehicle, this class is for you! Building from a foundation in Beginning Auto and Intermediate Auto class, the student will explore the operation and theory of the automobile. Successfully completing Beginning Auto Care and Intermediate Auto are a prerequisite to this class.

II. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Advanced Auto Technology is designed to accommodate a select group of highly interested, motivated students willing to accept leadership responsibilities. All aspects of the automobile and surrounding businesses will be explored. Participation in the SkillsUSA Auto Club is a requirement and participation in the Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills contests is encouraged. Auto Tech is a two period all year class (360 hours, 2 credits) for the serious auto student. Beginning Auto Care and Transportation Technology are prerequisites to this course and complete two years (540 hours) of automotive study. Advanced Auto may be repeated for additional credit with the instructors’ approval.

III. OBJECTIVES:Students will participate in a real life setting of an auto repair business and experience doing the repairs, dealing with customer relations, and other aspects of running an automotive business. All aspects of the automobile will be studied, including electrical system diagnostics, fuel injection system operation and service, computer control system operation and service, transmission and clutch operation and service, suspension and steering system operation and service, advanced brake system service, heating and air conditioning system operation and service. Students will also work toward becoming an ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certified technician.

IV. REFERENCE MATERIALS: The ‘Automotive Service’ book, (Tim Giles) will be used as the primary text book, along with extensive use of CDX online training, many handouts, automotive reference books and the ALLDATA computer information system. Reading Automotive magazines and publications are encouraged.

V. GRADING AND ASSESSMENT: Students will be required to keep a notebook which will include all of the material from Beginning Auto Care, Intermediate Auto Technology plus the class notes, handouts, and records of the shop work performed in this course. The notebook accounts for 50 percent of their grade. Students will also have written work from the textbook, work sheets, and unit tests as 40 percent of the assessment. In keeping with vocational education and job skills, students will also be evaluated on class participation, attitude, and attendance.

VI. CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS: The student must assume responsibility for following safe practices in the classroom and shop areas and are asked to adhere to the following rules:

No student will upset the learning process through disruptive inappropriate behavior. No student will intentionally do anything to harm any person, school or private property, or school equipment. Teacher’s instructions must be followed at all times. All students must work to the standards as given by the instructor. You are to arrive in class on time and prepared to work. Students are expected to bring all of the necessary tools, paper, pencils, etc., in order to meet class objectives. All other school rules must be complied with as listed in your current Student Handbook.

VII. SKILLSUSA and FORD/AAA: Participation in leadership activities is a requirement. Through these extra curricular organizations, students will be involved in leadership activities, competitions, community service, fund raising events and other club activities.
