Edgeworth Public School Shares Commonwealth Games Glory

The XXth Commonwealth Games begin in Glasgow, Scotland on 23 July. With only six weeks until the Games, the winning students and schools have been announced in the Premier’s Commonwealth Games Challenge. The Challenge, conducted by the NSW Division of Australian Commonwealth Games Association (ACGA NSW), was open to all students throughout NSW. Over 760 entries were received from government and private schools all over the State – from as far as Lismore, Albury, Broken Hill and even Norfolk Island.

Ten schools in NSW have won prizes, sharing the $15,200 cash up for grabs. One of those schools is Edgeworth Public School. Students were asked to submit artwork or essays featuring their favourite Commonwealth Games sport, their favourite sporting hero or a combination. Edgeworth PS teachers Brendan Gray and Kristen McGrath were instrumental in organising hundreds of entries from their school, easily the most from throughout the State. Accordingly the CEO of ACGA NSW, Peter Tate, will present a cheque for $1,500 to the school at this week’s assembly.

ACGA NSW was overwhelmed by the response to their first ever State-wide school competition. Mr Tate sincerely thanked all the students and schools for their participation and wonderful Challenge entries. “The quality of submissions from around the State was outstanding, with each entry displaying keen research skills and marvellous creativity. After this year’s successful Premier’s Challenge, we certainly intend conducting a similar school student competition during the lead up to the next Commonwealth Games being hosted at the Gold Coast in 2018” said Mr Tate.

Another featured highlight of the Challenge will be visits by Commonwealth Games athletes and heroes to award-winning schools. Joining Mr Tate at Edgeworth PS this Friday 13 June will be talented swimmer Maddison Elliott OAM. Maddi, from Gillieston Heights, will be attending her first Commonwealth Games. The 15 year old is the youngest of 59 swimmers selected to represent Australia in Glasgow. Maddi, a S8 classified swimmer, won Gold at the 2013 IPC Swimming World Championships in Montreal, in both the 50m and 100m freestyle events. She also collected silver in the 400m free.

Maddi hopes to add to that collection in six weeks time with students from Edgeworth Public School supporting her and cheering wildly from afar.
