  1. Contributory Factors in respect of Major Fatal Crashes

Major Contributory Factor / Road Safety Message
Fail to keep vehicle under control / Drivers should adhere to the speed limit at all times and be cautious when driving in areas where the road surface condition is poor.
Driving in the wrong lane / Motorists are encouraged to take regular breaks when driving long distances to avoid fatigue which may lead to lack of concentration and result in the driver veering their designated lane.
Overtook when unlawful / unsafe / Motorists should be alert at all times and look out for other motoristsbeforeovertaking on two way roads.
Disregard: stop sign / Motorists are urged to obey the rules of the road even when it seems as if the road is clear at the time.

  1. General Road Safety / Traffic Information

Build-up to the festive season Enforcements
Preparation for the festive is well underway and road users can expect robust activity from national, provincial, metropolitan as well as municipal traffic authorities.
The following will be the focus of the operations:
  1. Un-roadworthy buses and mini bus taxis
  2. Compliance in terms of documentation; namely permits and operating licenses.
  3. Moving violations (using a cellphone while driving, seatbelts including for rear passengers, etc.)
As part of the October Public Transport Month operations will also be conducted at bus stops, taxi ranks, truck stops, weigh bridges, toll gates and company depots. The focus will be on learner transport, mini bus taxis, long distance couches, commuter buses and freight transport.
