Extracurricular Expectations:
The variety show is an extracurricular event. All the regulations outlined in the Student Handbook apply to this event, including practices and applying to all cast and crew. Students are expected to complete their academic work first, turn homework in when due, and maintain positive conduct and leadership. The following scenarios will make a student Ineligible to participate in the show:
- Failing more than one class
- Failing one class and a “D” in one or more other classes
- Receiving and ACR, suspension, or bus suspension from now until the show
- Any unexcused absence or excessive tardies (good attendance is mandatory)
Please get your work done and turned in on time.
Screenings and Practices:
Screenings/Auditions
- All performances must be school appropriate and positive. The work “appropriate” applies to language/lyrics, subject matter, dance moves and dress approved by Mrs. Heal or Mrs. Weger
- Lyrics and Scripts must be printed and pre-approved by Mrs. Heal or Mrs. Weger
- December practice dates and sign-up sheets will be posted outside art room. ASAP
- Performances will be viewed and approved during the first week of practice. If approval is not given, the students will be given suggestions for changes.
- Auditions for the “Secret Skit” will take place on Thursday, Nov. 19th
from 2:50- 5:00 in the Art room If you have a tight schedule, you may audition and leave early.
Practices
Many groups will need to practice at home. Each group is expected to attend one at school practice each week, which will be supervised and “coached.” Students may sign up for additional at-school practice times if needed. Sign-up sheets for practice times will be outside the Art Room door.
Special Practices
We will have final rehearsals in the CHS auditorium on Tuesday, January5th, Wednesday, 6th, and Thursday7th. The time will be after school until 6:00 p.m. Students will ride a bus from CIS to the high school and meet in the auditorium to practice on-stage. Students will need to be picked up after practice.
Please: We need to run the entire show from beginning to end, all will need to stay. Back stage, announcers and lights will need to run through the show as it will be performed on Friday. It is their turn to practice set-up along with you.
Cuts
Students may be cut from the show if they become ineligible according to the extracurricular expectations (see first page), fail to meet the practice schedule or practice needed for their performance, or if their conduct during practices becomes unproductive for the group.
Performance Guidelines and Tips:
“That’s Entertainment!”
*Be loud and proud! Make sure your audience can see and hear you. Project your voice, stand facing the audience (no backs to them) and practice pronunciation/enunciation. Use some of your family members as practice audiences.
*Props may need to be created after school. You are in charge of getting and/or making your own props. The Art room is available for creating and I can help you get started. Get props pre-approved by Mrs. Heal or Mrs. Weger.
*Costumes may also need to be created at minimal cost. Costumes or dress doesn’t need to be fancy, but wearing what you wear everyday (unless you are portraying a CIS Jr. High student) might be a bit dull. Think about the topic or setting of your performance and plan your dress accordingly. Costumes and dress need to be pre-approved by Mrs. Heal or Mrs. Weger.
*Lip-syncing is really a combination of acting and dancing! If you plan to lip-sync, you are portraying the artist singing. What does he/she wear? What special moves does the artist bring to the performance? You will need to choreograph your song and add some “flash”, like a live performance would have.
*Make sure that your audience can understand and relate to your performance. If you are using an “inside” joke, most people will not be entertained. Look for material that will work for 5 & 6th graders as well as adults…this is your audience.
If you have any questions, please call or e-mail Mrs. Heal or Mrs. Weger () ()
