FIP EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS, CHANTILLY

The HPA ran a successful qualifying tournament, the finals of which were played on International Day, to find ateam to represent England in the FIP 8 Goal European Championships in Chantilly. Apache beat Chester Racecourse in the final and so Max Dear (0), Freddie Dear (3), Jack Mesquita (1) (replacement for George Pearson) and Olly Tuthill (4) won their places to wear the England shirt.

England were drawn against Austria, Spain and Ireland in the group stages and qualified for the semi-finals by beating the first two, only losing narrowly to Ireland in their final league match. Finishing second in their group meant that England would face home team France in the semi-final, a well balanced team of four experienced 2-goal players. In a low scoring, tough game England booked their place in the final with a 3-2 victory. The Irish defeated Italy in their semi-final, and so the scene was set for a rematch.

England, keen to avenge defeat in the league matches, started very well and quickly put two goals on the board. However, some slack marking by the English and slick play by the Irish meant the scores stood at 2 all by the end of the first chukka.
The second chukka saw only one goal, for the Irish, meaning they held the lead 3-2 at treading in time.
The half time oranges clearly invigorated England as they scored 3 unanswered goals in the third chukka, one each from Mesquita, Tuthill and Max Dear.
So the final chukka began with England in the ascendancy; with Tuthill on Cognac (the horse!), who went on to win best playing pony, it was England who scored the only goal thus ensuring that they were crowned champions.
