AtTiddlywinks Day Nurseryweareawarethatchildren mayhaveordevelopanallergy resultinginanallergicreaction.Ouraimsaretoensureallergicreactions are minimised or,wherepossible, prevented andthatstaffarefullyawareofhowto supportachild whomaybehavinganallergicreaction.

Ourprocedures

•Ourstaffaremadeawareofthesignsandsymptomsofapossibleallergic reactionincaseofanunknownorfirstreactioninachild.Thesemayinclude arashorhives,nausea,stomach pain,diarrhoea, itchyskin,runnyeyes, shortnessofbreath,chestpain,swellingofthemouthortongue,swellingto theairwaysto thelungs,wheezingandanaphylaxis

•Weaskparentstoshareallinformationaboutallergicreactionsandallergies onchild’sregistrationform

•Weshareallinformationwithallstaffandkeepanallergyregisterinmain office and in each nursery room

•Whereachildhasaknownallergy,thenurserymanagerwillcarryoutafull AllergyRiskAssessment Procedurewiththeparentpriortothechildstarting thenurseryand sharesthisassessmentwithallstaff

•Allfoodpreparedforachildwithaspecificallergyispreparedinanarea wherethereisnochanceofcontaminationandservedonequipmentthathas notbeenin contactwiththisspecificfoodtype,e.g.nuts

•Themanager,catering companyandparentswillworktogethertoensureachild withspecific foodallergiesreceivesnofoodatnursery thatmayharmthem. This may include designingan appropriatemenu or substitutingspecific mealsonthecurrentnurserymenu

•Seating will be monitored for children with allergies. Where deemed appropriatestaffwillsitwithchildrenwhohaveallergies andwhereage/stage appropriatestaffwilldiscussfoodallergiesandthe potentialrisks

•Ifachildhasanallergicreactiontofood,abeeorwaspsting,plantetc.afirst- aidtrainedmemberofstaffwillactquicklyandadminister theappropriate treatment,ifappropriate.Wewillinformparentsandrecordtheinformationin theincidentbookandontheallergyregister

•Ifanallergicreactionrequiresspecialisttreatment,e.g.anEpiPen,thenat leasttwo membersofstaffworkingdirectlywith thechildand the managerwill receivespecificmedicaltrainingtobeableto administerthe treatmentto each individualchild.

Transportingchildrentohospitalprocedures

Thenurserymanager/staffmembermust:

•Callforanambulanceimmediatelyiftheallergicreactionissevere.DONOT

attempttotransportthesickchildin yourown vehicle

•Whilstwaitingfortheambulance,contacttheparent(s)andarrangetomeet thematthe hospital

•Arrangeforthemostappropriatememberofstafftoaccompanythechild takingwiththemanyrelevantinformationsuchasregistration forms,relevant medicationsheets,medicationandthechild’scomforter.

•Redeploystaffifnecessarytoensurethereisadequatestaffdeploymentto carefortheremainingchildren.Thismaymeantemporarily groupingthe childrentogether

•Informamemberofthe managementteam immediately

•Remaincalmatalltimes.Childrenwhowitnessanincidentmaywellbe affectedbyitandmayneedlotsofcuddlesandreassurance. Staffmayalso requireadditionalsupportfollowingtheaccident.
