NAPS Statement of Understanding
NAME: ______
(last, first, MI)
1. Based on your completed academic planner and scholarship award, you were awarded a 4 year scholarship with _____ NAPS semester(s). NAPS stands for “Normal Academic Progression System.” The purpose of NAPS is to provide the correct length of scholarship to ensure academic and military alignment so scholarship benefits end at the same time a Cadet is commissioned. The following applies based on each case indicated:
a) If you contracted with 8 semesters left on your planner and had 8 NAPS semesters you are only authorized 8 semesters of scholarship benefits. Should you need an additional 9th semester to graduate, you will not receive scholarship benefits thatsemester.
b) If you contracted with 8 or 9 semesters left on your planner
and had 9 NAPS semesters, you are authorized one additional semester of scholarship benefits beyond 8. Youmust notify your ROTC Administrative Office “the semester prior” to that 9th semester to lock-in your scholarship benefits.
c) If you contracted with 9 or 10 semesters left on your planner and you had 10 NAPS semesters, you are authorized up to two additional semesters of scholarship benefits beyond 8. You must notify your ROTC Administrative Office the semester prior to that 9th semester (and 10th semester as applicable) to lock-in your scholarship benefits.
3. You can use a summer term (spring term or summer term at BYU) in lieu of a NAPS semester. To do this, you must apply for such with your ROTC Admin Office within the first 60 days of the start of the semester “prior” to that summer term you desire. You must receive approval from the Professor of Military Science (PMS) “and” from U.S. Army Cadet Command.
4. You must take an ROTC class during an approved NAPS semester (not during an approved summer term used in lieu of a NAPS semester). What ROTC class you take depends upon ROTC class sequencing and your academic planner. The Professor of Military Science at BYU, or Officer in Charge if you are attending a Partnership School has final approval for what ROTC class you must take.
5. If you request and/or are selected for Active Duty after commissioning, the 4 year Active Duty obligation portion of your 8 year service obligation is subject to an increaseof 5 months for each additional NAPS semester received (or summer term received in lieu of a NAPS semester). A maximum of 10 total semesters or terms of scholarship benefits applies in all cases.
