(Shakespeare and More List 20) / Investigate
Lesson one
Organise the children into pairs. Give each pair a landscape piece of card/paper with a line down the centre. Then each pair is given a word to spell (or find out in a dictionary) from the list on the left. Place this in the right hand side of the paper then write the root word on the left hand side of the paper. Display on the Word Wall until next lesson.
Lesson two
Open sort (including exception words). Create a word bank from the list from the last lesson and ask the children to work in small groups to sort them (verbs, nouns, roots, suffixes, ation, sion etc)
Record those somehow e.g. by placing the lists on the word wall.
Challenge
Lesson three
Speed sort
Can we generate a rule for these words and prove it by adding further words to our word bank?
Lesson four
Working collaboratively in small groups, write a paragraph including as many ation/sion words as you can.
(this will help to check understanding of the meanings of the word)
Reflect
Lesson five
In small groups, act out your writing as a small drama that demonstrates understanding of the words.
Lesson five/six
In small groups or pairs, create a game that helps consolidate understanding of one of the spelling rules that we have learnt.
