DIRECTOR OF MUSIC MINISTRIES

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Director of Music Ministries is a part-time position that encompasses all congregational music-related functions at ALC.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to read music and understand music theory.
  • Ability to teach and lead others in music.
  • Ability to proficiently play the piano and the organ.
  • Ability and experience in the area of musical performance.
  • Ability to perform a wide range of musical styles.
  • Ability to interact positively with others and communicate effectively.
  • Understand the importance of music in the liturgy.
  • Ability to select appropriate music for worship services and choir anthems.
  • Present a professional demeanor.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Recruit and train volunteers for the choir and bell choir.
  • Conduct regular and special rehearsals throughout the year.
  • Plan, select and coordinate the musical offerings and hymns for worship gatherings.
  • Submit musical selections to the church office for printing in the weekly bulletin no later than the Monday prior to the worship gathering (for Sunday worship).
  • Review bulletin for accuracy of music and flow of liturgy.
  • Plan and carry out the children’s music program, including music for Sunday School, VBS, Christmas program and occasional musical offerings during worship.
  • Play piano and organ at worship gathering, and other instruments, depending on ability.
  • Maintain and assess needs of sound equipment and regularly test sound board, microphones and other sound-related equipment.
  • Train and oversee individuals to operate the sound equipment.
  • Oversee and maintain all music-and sound-related equipment, instruments and sheet music used by ALC.
  • Provide annual budget needs to the Financial Oversight Team.
  • Consult with family members regarding music for weddings and funerals, as requested. (Appropriate fee will be paid for these services over and above regular salary.)
  • Oversee set-up of musical components in sanctuary or fellowship hall for all congregational services and/or special events.
  • Regularly evaluate music program to meet changing needs of the congregation.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

  • It is recommended that the Director of Music participate in onemusic education seminar per year hosted by the ELCA or other recognized training, to be paid for by ALC.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Strong knowledge of music and music theory.
  • Knowledge of musical scales and how the bells operate.
  • At least 10 years’ experience playing the piano.
  • At least 5 years’ experience playing a church organ.

FAITH REQUIREMENTS
Must be a baptized Christian confessing that the Holy Scriptures are the word of God.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Must possess the ability to read and communicate on a professional level with the ability to communicate effectively in-person and electronically with diverse groups and individuals.

REASONING ABILITY
Must be able to identify problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
The Director of Music Ministries works in collaboration with the Pastor, with oversight by the Leadership Team. The Pastor will provide feedback via an annual performance review.
