Wishing all of you a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2018!
I’m dreaming of a WHITE CHRISTMAS!
Courtyard Drive was really quiet on the morning of December 8 when five inches of snow beauti-fully blanketed the ground. But it didn’t take long for a few little visitors to don their winter gear and head outside to frolic in the rare Louisiana snow. Above are Benita Swanson’s great grandkids Andrew and Ava with “Frosty 1,2,3” and Tootsie and Byron Beverly’s grand-daughter Abby (at right) with her snowwoman “Bella.” Resident Cathy Maddoxcaptured the postcard perfect scene below with the sun shining brightly the day after the snowfall. Bing Crosby may have dreamed of a white Christmas, but it arrived in the Greens 17 days early!
WHY DOES THE HOA COLLECT DUES? AND WHAT CAN THE MONEY BE USED FOR?

All of the Greens Acts of Restrictions are consistent in stating that “In order to protect each purchaser’s investment, each lot owner shall be required to become an automatic member of the Pelican Point Golf Community Greens Association and immediately assume the responsibilities by abiding by its rules and regulations and promptly contributing membership dues as set by the Association.” Restrictions for lots 362-401, (paragraph, 25) and lots 505-550 (paragraph 26) also state that the monthly dues are due in full prior to the first of each month. Whereas, Restrictions for lots 661-706 (paragraph 26) and lots 707-744 (paragraph 26) state that the monthly dues shall be billed quarterly.
All the Restrictions clearly state that “The share of the monthly dues for the Pelican Point Homeowner’s dues will increase when the Pelican Point Homeowners Association increases its dues.” The dues paid to Pelican Point are for guard service, liability insurance, the two highway 44 entrances and other common areas that all Pelican Point homeowners share." We pay the PPHOA $37.50 per month per household (there are currently 144 households in the Greens) which amounts to $5400 per month, or $64,800 per year. Per the Memorandum of Understanding(MOU) with Pelican Point, $11,000 per year is returned to the Greens to defray the cost of property insurance and landscape maintenance.
As per the Restrictions, the remaining $87.50 per household must be used for: (1) maintenance of all the common areas; (2) maintenance of the private streets; (3) maintenance of the Activity Center which includes the pool and the work-out area; (4) All the expenses associated with the leased Community Center, i.e. insurance, repairs, utilities, cleaning, etc.; and (5) any and all expenses associated with the hiring of a management company and their employees.

NADEN FAMILY CELEBRATION – Fourteen members of the Naden family, plus two cruising friends, took a Royal Caribbean cruise Nov. 18-26 to the Caribbean for four big celebratory events: Craig’s 70th birthday Nov. 1, his and wife Roberta’s 50th anniversary Nov. 11, niece Ali’s 41st birthday Nov. 21, and son-in-law Bill’s 50th birthday Dec. 8. Stops in San Juan and St. Maarten were re-routed to Cozumel and Falmouth due to extensive hurri-cane damage to the islands. Craig, accompanied by his granddaughter Londyn, age 11, is proud to have completed a bucket list item: zip lining on the world’s longest zip line over water (9550ft. high, 2311 ft. [.44 miles] long, 40-50 mph). Wow, Craig, that’s impressive! Now what’s next on that bucket list?

GARDEN CLUB NEWS – The Pelican Point Garden held its Christmas social on Dec. 14 with 16 in attendance. Winners of the door decorating contest were announced: first – 5412 Cypress Point, Alisa Settoon; second – 40587 Pelican Point Pkwy., Rae Ann Duvernay; third – 6176 Royal Dunes, Chris/Stephanie Bonaventure. After a buffet luncheon, members played a game for the gift exchange. Each selected a secret word, and as that word came up in ’Twas the Night before Christmas, she picked a gift from the stack. Mariah Simoneaux will discuss “Louisiana Super Plants” at the January 11 meeting.

CARD OF THANKS
We would like to thank all of our neighbors and friends for their outpouring of kindness during the most tragic time of our lives. The food, cards, Mass enrollments, and prayers were greatly appreciated. Our prayer is that whoever did this willbe found and prosecuted, for only then will we have closure. All we hope for is justice for Brian.

ROCKIN’ AROUND THE
CHRISTMAS TREE
Although the flu and travel kept a few regulars away, the Greens Christmas party on Dec. 2 got off to a friendly start with socializing and delicious appetizers before the music cranked up and the dancing began.
Right:
Tootsie, Byron, Stella, Ray, Karen, Weezie, Nolan
Left:
Ruby,
Janet,
James (who sang O Holy Night)
Things gotlivelier with a nice mix of slow and fast songs. DJ Chris (below left) even lead the line dances that were popular with the ladiesand a few guys.
The evening ended on a patriotic note when the crowd joined in singing God Bless America and Star Spangled Banner. And, no one took a knee!
Many thanks to social chair Sissy (arms up) and committee for a festive evening and their efforts all through the year. From the look of it, Sissy didn’t seem the least bit worried about her new titanium hip!

WONDERFUL CHRISTMASTIME – Gabriella (below center), who helped organize the annual dinner event Dec. 12 for the Pelican Point ladies, poses with our own Betty and Michelle who had a table display of their handiwork. The two Greens artists exhibited theirpaintings, smocked dresses and othercrafts. Among the 77 in the Christmas mood were quite a few Greens ladies, including (above from left) Penny, Beverly, Tracy, Cindy, Sissy, Gloria, and Peggy. Gabriella currently serves on the Pelican Point and Greens HOA boards.

Thanks for your kindness!
Thanks to everyone who donated toys to Sheriff Wiley’s annual Christmas Crusade for Kids and non-perishables to the St. Theresa food pantry. Your generosity to brighten the holidays of the less fortunate in Ascension Parish is appreciated.

May 2018 brings us blessings and peace. Even if we don’t make New Year’s resolutions, it can’t hurt to set goals that might enrich our lives. Every day, look up a word you don’t know in the dictionary. Then, shock your friends by using it. Try doing something you’ve always wanted to do---even if it scares you. And give up hard feelings against one thing or person.
Healthy Weight Week is January 14-20. ( – We’ve all over indulged in holiday goodies. We got off schedule, and ate what was convenient. In an effort to lose those extra pounds, don’t go on a fad diet. It might produce immediate results, but as soon as you return to your regular eating habits, so will the pounds. And don’t even consider diet pills unless prescribed and meticulously monitored by your physician. They can cause serious, even fatal complications.
Be realistic. Maintain a healthy and sustainable weight. Exercise is still a very reliable way to lose weight and improve general well-being. I hope to encounter some of you walking yourself or your dog.
Being overweight increases your chance of heart disease, diabetes, osteoarthritis, and even cancer.
Poison Prevention Week is January 22-28. ( – Poisons can be inhaled, ingested or absorbed. If you do not have the Poison Control number posted in a highly visible place or on your phone, do it now: 1-888-222-1222. If a poisoning occurs, seconds count. Call as soon as poisoning is suspected. Be prepared to give pertinent information, and if transported to a hospital, bring the container with you.
Prevention is much more effective than cure: (1) Do not mix household products which can produce dangerous gases. (2) Read the label on medications before taking or using every time. (3) Keep potentially poisonous substances out of the reach of pets/children. (4) Keep all products in their original container. (5) Ask your pharmacist about potential drug interactions, including OTCs/herbs/supplements. (6) Shake liquid medications immediately before pouring a dose. If not, your last few doses could be lethal.
Trivia: In 1930, a new lithium containing drink was introduced (Bib-label) to relieve the depressive effects of a hangover. It is still on the market today, but minus the lithium. You know it as 7-UP.
And, as always, please take care.
HOLLY JOLLY CHRISTMAS – Getting into the spirit of the season on December 6 with their annual Christmas outing are (above, seated) Vonnie, Ruth Ann, Sissy; (standing) Gloria, Virginia, Chere, Denise, and Millie. After a delicious lunch at Bistro Byronz, several headed to L’Auberge for some gaming, while a few opted to spend their money for some shopping. Put these bourée girls together and it’s sure to be merry and bright … and definitely not a silent night!

THE 4-LEGGED REPORT
Submitted by Leigh McGrew
Here’s our pet of the month, Spike Slavich. Greg and Peggy are parents of the 9-year-old Beagle. His official name is Spike the Tiger, named for Snoopy’s evil cousin from the Daisy Hill Puppy Farm. Because his parents were both school teachers, it comes as no surprise that Spike can spell and knows w-a-l-k, which means taking a stroll around the neighborhood. He enjoys checking out the ponds to sniff out wildlife activity. Look out if Spike sees a rabbit, however, because it’s full Beagle mode. His favorite treat is peanut butter; he can hear the jar opening from anywhere and comes running. Spike is not happy when left alone, as he expects to be included in every-thing. The Slavich grandkids just adore Spike, and he loves both Caitlyn and Sawyer but isn’t quite sure what to make about little Addy yet. See you around, Spike!
RESOLVE TO GET INVOLVED
AND KNOW THE RULES
As we say farewell to another year, 2018 might be the perfect timeto become active in the Greens neighborhood. In addition to our HOA officers, the ten standing committees keep the community moving along. If one of your resolutions is to become more involved, this could be the opportunity you’re looking for. Read the committee descriptions online at for more details.
Several notices were emailed recently from the PPHOA office to remind residents of guidelines that apply to Greens homeowners, too. In case you didn’t get those emails, here are the reminders as a refresher: (1)Garbage cans should be put out for pickup no earlier than one day prior to scheduled pickup. Garbage cans should be stored in the garage, not in the driveway or yard. (2) Household pets are to be kept in their yard. They are not allowed to roam free. When walking through the neighborhood, all dogs must be on a leash. This is not only a Pelican Point restriction, but also an Ascension Parish ordinance. Don’t forget to bring a plastic bag to scoop your pet’s poop.

LUNCH WITH GIRLFRIENDS
By Kathy O’Malley/ Submitted by Gayle Smith
Elaine’s vertigo has never been worse
Kay can’t recall where she left her purse
Rhonda’s about to replace her knees
Linda’s breathing is tinged with a wheeze
Donna's left boob has a troublesome lump
Diane’s on her third trip to take a dump
Lorraine’s husband can’t remember a thing
Nine years a widow, Marge still wears her ring
Marlene is dealing with another UTI
Sally’s giving a hearing aid another try
Marie has decided she can’t drive at night
Sharon still wears clothes two sizes too tight
They’ve been through divorces and babies and wakes
They do for each other whatever it takes
They’ve already buried Marcia and Kate
And truthfully, Lizzie’s not looking so great
So whenever they can, they get out to eat
Open bottles of wine and forget their sore feet
There’s laughing and crying and letting down guards
And when the bill comes, there’s ten credit cards
So here’s to the waiters who keep orders straight
And to the places that let lunches run three hours late
And here’s to the girlfriends, those near and those far
Here's to the girlfriends, you know who you are.
WINTER WONDERLAND – Jerry and Mona (below) survived a missed connection (due to snow and ice on the New Orleans airplane), heavy snow, and cold, cold, cold weather on their recent trip to Germany and France. Down coats suggested by neighborsKaren and Ray Baker proved to be a Godsend. Still, the travel duo enjoyed the cathedrals in Cologne and Strasbourg, castles in Marksburg and Heidelberg, and walking around picturesque towns in Germany and France. A motor coach trip to The Black Forrest felt like visiting a land from a fairy tale. The Viking cruise was all it promised to be – pampered, fun, and relaxing. Jerry and Mona forged new friendshipsbut were quite happy to be home in acceptable and blessedly warm weather. In case you’re wondering about the twin look, “By the time I went to the store, burgundy was the only color left,” said Mona.“Good thing neither one of us had a problem with it, as we got lots of teasing on the trip.”

HAPPY HOLIDAYS – After a cancelled flight forced them to leave home a day later than planned, Pat and Millie (below) were delighted to land safely at Boston’s Logan Airport to celebrate an early Christmas with daughter Jamie’s family. Grandkids Rex and Celina were still in school but kept Papa and Gam busy with hectic sports schedules of gymnastics, basketball, and tennis. Although no snow fell while the Mathernes were in Ipswich, MA, temps dipped into the teens most days, making for some brutal cold. They flew home through Atlanta the day after the fire and power outage which cancelled 1,180 flights. “We woke up at 3 a.m. to see if power had been restored. We’re so happyour return was not on Sunday of the Atlanta fiasco,” both agreed.
