Director of Organisational Development - Vacancy
The Director of Organisational Development works closely with the other Senior Officers and Executive Committee of the Association in order to support ASME’s mission, strategic priorities and related co-ordination goals. The main responsibilities and duties of the post-holder are set out in the attached job description.
The appointment will be for a three-year term from October 2015, subject to satisfactory annual reviews.
Duties are expected to take in the region of the equivalent of two days per month. An honorarium of £5,000 per annum will be payable directly to the successful applicant through ASME’s payroll.

Background
ASME is a membership organisation and registered charity set up in 1957 to promote interest, development and research in medical education. At the time of writing (June 2015) individual membership has grown to just over 1,400 and just over 80 institutional members. Membership is largely UK based but there is an increasing trend for European, North American and southern hemisphere members. Benefits to individual members include:

The Association provides services to its members by utilising a small annual development budget.
Job Purpose
Under the direction of the President, the CEO and the Chair of Council, the overall objective of the Director of Organisational Development (DOD) is to support ASME’s mission, strategic priorities and related co-ordination goals. The DOD is responsible for supporting and developing joint operations across ASME’s organisational elements, particularly the Special Interest Groups (SIGs) and ensuring continuous improvement of ASME’s activities, related to SIG activities and other services (e.g. resource development and dissemination), within the context of ASME’s strategy.
In meeting these responsibilities, the DOD will be supported by theCEO, the Chair of Council and ASME’s Secretariat.
Duties and Responsibilities
The DOD is responsible for support to the Chair of Council and Executive on:
- Strategic planning, monitoring and reporting progress and activities
- Knowledge management
- External relations and advocacy
- Resource Mobilisation
Strategic planning, monitoring, assessment and reporting
- Participates in Executive meetings, Away Days and ASME events (e.g. the Annual Scientific Meeting); works with the SIG Chairs and provides support to them
- Horizon scans the current breadth of UK and international medical education relevant to the agreed strategic priorities of ASME to identify priority areas for new and/or further organisational development
- Proactively generates and shares ideas with colleagues, in particular the Senior Officers and Executive Committee and takes the lead in developing proposals for consideration
- Assists in monitoring the breadth of all ASME activities in conjunction with the CEO and other Executive Committee colleagues to identify where progress needs to be made, or if consideration is required re a potential change of direction, change in priorities
- Works with SIG leads, external partners (e.g. Wiley) and other agencies (e.g. GMC) to implement and review the ASME Strategic Plan
- Actively reports to the other Senior Officers (President, CEO andthe Chair of Council) on activity, progress and results, including assessment of priority delivery
- Co-ordinates and consolidates ASME activities, products and services to ensure linkages and consistency
- Assists in assessing and determining the effective allocation of support and resources
Knowledge management
- Works with the CEO and SIG leads to ensure the development of effective communication and information events and materials
- Works with the CEO and SIG leads to evaluate the impact and oversee the evolution of events, products and tools, including ASME events and journals
External relations and advocacy
- Works with the President, CEO and Chair of Councilto establish effective and collaborative dialogue with members and external stakeholders
- Represents ASME at external meetings of related bodies and institutions where appropriate/strategic, particularly the Academy of Medical Educators(AoME) Council Meetings. This facet of the role may require attendance at UK and overseas policy, practice and research events
- Leads on responding to written policy consultations and other forms of debate and consultation on medical education, with support from appropriate members of the Executive and the wider ASME community as appropriate
Resource Mobilisation
- Supports the efforts of the Senior Officers to identify and nurture key strategic alliances as well as identify opportunities to attract or leverage resources
General responsibilities
- Attendsand contributes to the Publications Board of Management (3 times per annum) representing ASME
- To act as Deputy Chair of ASME Council; to chair Executive and Council meetings in the absence of the Chair of Council

The Director of Organisational Developmentis not required to be based in Edinburgh but should be able to visit the office, meeting with the Chief Executive Officer,either in person or virtually by Skype or similar method, approximately every 4-6 weeks.
The Director of Organisational Developmentwill be expected to attend the following ASME events:
- The Annual Scientific Meeting(4 days in total, usually early/mid July). The DOD will chair a variety of sessions as required/agreed in advance
- 2 Executive Committee meetings per annum, venues usually rotating between London and Edinburgh
- The Senior Officers Away Days/Strategic Planning Days (2 days, usually late January)
- Short courses/conferences/meetings which align with the strategic aims of the organisation and as agreed with the other Senior Officers
The postholder should be able to represent the Association at other national/international conferences as agreed in advance with the other Senior Officers.
Remuneration/Honorarium
An honorarium of £5,000 per annum will be paid directly to the postholder through ASME’s payroll (subject to UK Tax and NI at the relevant rates). A letter of support from the applicant’s employer/institution is required at the time of application.
Travel and subsistence expenses will be met by ASME in line with the Association’s Travel Policy.
Full managerial and administrative support is provided by the Chief Executive Officer and the ASME Secretariat.
The annual review of the Director of Strategic Development will be carried out by ASME’s President and the Chair of Council.
