Associate Degrees for Transfer to the California State University (CSU) campuses

Guaranteed Admission to a CSU campus

The Associate Degree for Transfer to the CSU guarantee transfer to a California State University campus. Completion of the degree:

  • Guarantees admission with junior standing to the CSU system.
  • Grants students priority admission to their local CSU campus and to a program or major that is similar to the major of their Associate Degree for Transfer major.
  • Prohibits CSU campuses from requiring students to repeat courses that are similar to courses completed as part of the associate degree for transfer at Pierce College.
  • Prohibits the CSU campuses from requiring students to take more than 60 units to complete a 120-unit baccalaureate degree.

Important Information

  • Completion of an associate degree for transfer is not a requirement for transfer to a CSU. There are other transfer pathways available to students. See the CSUMentor website @ www.csumentor.edu for details.
  • Completion of one of these degrees does not guarantee admission to a CSU campus or major. It guarantees admission to the CSU system.
  • These degrees do not represent all CSU majors. See the CSUMentor website @ www.csumentor.edu for details.
  • If the community college that students are attending does not offer an associate degree for transfer to the CSU in their major, students should see an academic counselor to develop an educational plan.
  • Some CSU campuses and majors are impacted. If a student’s goal is to transfer to a CSU campus/major that is impacted, they must complete additional requirements. For complete details, see CSUMentor at: http://www.calstate.edu/SAS/impactioninfo.shtml

Degree Requirements

  • Unit Requirement: A minimum of 60 CSU transferable semesterunits must be completed for the degree.
  • Residency Requirement: A minimum of 12-semester or 18-quarter units must be completed at the college awarding the degree. We need an additional policy on this. BR 6201.13 allows colleges torequire more the 12 units. For this degree, we should not be allowed to require more the 12 units.
  • Scholarship Requirement: A minimum “C” (2.0) cumulative grade point average is required for coursework applied toward this degree.
  • Major Requirements: A minimum of 18 semester units in a major. Each course counted toward the major requirements must be completed with a grade of “C” or better or a “P” if the course is taken on a “pass-no pass” basis.
  • General Education Requirements: Full completion of either the CSU GE Breadth Certification Plan or the IGETC. General Education requirements must be completed with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or better. For the IGETC, each course applied toward the satisfaction of IGETC requirements must be completed with a grade of C or higher. See the CSU GE Plan and IGETC at the community college of attendance for complete details of each plan. Should we add the IGETC and CSU GE Plan to BR 6201.14 on Associate Degree ge plans?
  • Graduation Competency Requirement in Math and Reading & Writing:Completion of the CSU GE Breadth Plan or IGETC satisfies this requirement. We need to add language to BR 6201 and/or e-reg 79 on competency clarifying that completion of any course in CSU GE B4 and IGETC 2A meets competency; ex: Stats 1
  • Double-counting of coursework:
  • Courses may be used only once to satisfy one IGETC or CSU GE subject area even if they are listed in more than one subject area. The only exception is IGETC Area 6A: Language Other than English. See IGETC for complete details. See IGETC Standards and CSU EO 1033 for complete details.
  • A course may be used to satisfy both a general education requirement and a major requirement. Need a policy on this regardless – see proposed edits to BR 6201.
  • Coursework used to satisfy the CSU Graduation requirement in American Ideals may also be applied toward satisfaction of the IGETC and CSU GE Plan. See CSU EO 1033 for complete details.
  • Major Coursework from another California Community College reciprocity: We need a policy on this.
  • In recognition that students often attend multiple California Community Colleges, coursework completed toward the major requirements of this degree at any of the California Community Colleges will be honored toward satisfaction of the same major regardless of if the community college awarding the degree requires/offers the equivalent course. In other words, major coursework should be applied to the major requirements in which it is listed by the community college where the work was completed. For example, if College A is awarding the degree using major coursework completed at College B, College A will apply the coursework based on where College B applied the course.
  • Coursework from all Other United States Regionally Accredited Institutions
  • There is no limitation on the number of courses completed at other United States regionally accredited institutions that can be applied toward the degree requirements. See IGETC Standards and CSU EO 1033 for IGETC and CSU GE guidelines. We need a policy on major coursework. For major coursework from US regionally accredited institutions other than CCCs, the coursework should be evaluated toward satisfaction of major requirements based on content review by the discipline faculty member or their designee. If the course satisfies a major requirement at any of the CCCs it may be applied toward satisfaction of the major regardless of if the CCC of attendance requires/offers the course.
  • Use of upper-division coursework:
  • Upper-division coursework may be applied to the degree per the guidelines in E-119, the IGETC Standards and CSU EO 1033.
