This form is for all candidates for Fellowship (not Corresponding or Honorary). Not all questions will be relevant to all candidates, but candidates and proposers are asked to complete the form as fully as possible. In completing the form, Proposers should not rely on the Committee’s existing knowledge of the candidate, no matter how well known the candidate may be. Please refer to the additional document Criteria for Election before completing this form.
The RSE is particularly interested in electingcandidates who are not within academia, including those from business, the professions, public affairsand leadership, and is looking for Fellows in all disciplines that will have active involvement in the work of the RSE. Candidates that already have a range of wider interests and involvements across Scottish public life are particularly suitable. Proposers are advised to hold detailed discussions with the candidate before completing this form. However, Candidates must be told that election is highly competitive with no guarantee of success.
Nomination Guidance:
-Proposers must be (Ordinary) Fellows of the Society. Assessors can be Fellows, Corresponding Fellows or Honorary Fellows.
-Proposers are responsible for identifying the two Assessors and ensuring their report is submitted by the deadline
-The Proposer and Assessors must have personal knowledge of the Candidate’s work, and it is advisable that at least one of the three is from the same subject area.
-However, it is also advisable that the Proposer and Assessors have some distance from the Candidate (not a line manager, recentsupervisor, close collaborator etc.)
-Only one of the Proposer or Assessors may be employed by the same Institution as the Candidate. It is in the Candidate’s interest that the Proposer and Assessors are from different institutions to show the breadth of support for the candidate.
-Sectional Committee Conveners cannot act either as Proposers or Assessors. Members of Sectional Committees and Council members not directly involved in the decision-making process (Trustees and Observers not also on the Fellowship Committee) can be Proposers and Assessors (no other Council members may do so).
-A Fellow can normally be associated with only two new nominations for Fellowship. An exception exists for new nominations of female candidates, younger candidates, candidates from outside academia and Honorary and Corresponding candidates – here there is no restriction. Existing nominations in their second or third year of consideration do not count towards this limit.
-The case must be made on this form. No unsolicited additional materials will be accepted.
-The Sectional Committee members considering this nomination will not necessarily be specialists in the Candidate’s specific area, so this form should be completed with this in mind.
-The nomination should be kept confidential.
-Communications on the candidature shall normally take place with the Proposer only.
Updates:
-If not successful in its first year, the Nomination will automatically be considered for another two years (unless withdrawn).
-Proposers are strongly encouraged to work with the Candidate to provide update information (on a form supplied by the Fellowship Office) for each year the candidature is considered.
Candidates are asked to note that, as the RSE is an independent charity, it is necessary for its Fellows to pay an annual subscription and a one-off joining fee.
Please return an electronic copy of this completed nomination form by 31 May 2018, to Morven Chisholm, Fellowship and Young Academy Manager. Electronic or scanned signatures are acceptable. Paper copies are not required. Assessor forms must also be submitted by this date (either directly by the Assessors, or through the Proposer).
Any questions about this, or any other aspect of the nominations process, should also be directed to Morven Chisholm (, 0131 240 5018).
