The Burkhart Center for Autism Education and Research is a comprehensive, state-of-the-art center with a three-fold mission: 1) to provide services and supports to individuals with ASD and their familiesacross West Texas and the surrounding area, 2) to offer cutting-edge training to teachers, families, and other professionals to provide effective and evidence-based services and supports to individuals with ASD, and 3) to conduct significant, sponsored research across a variety of areas to better understand and overcome the causes and effects of ASD across the life-span in ways that improve functioning and quality of life for people with ASD and their families.

The College of Education is looking for a collaborative researcher with a track-record of productivity to serve as an Assistant Professor in the BCBA Approved Course Sequence in the Burkhart Center. The Burkhart Center approved course sequence focuses on training special education professionals working in the public schools as autism specialists and BCBAs by providing both the coursework and supervision to the students. In their role as Assistant Professor, the successful candidate will be an instructor in the BCBA course sequence, will act as a BCBA supervisor for the students in the cohort, and will partner with other Burkhart Center staff to evaluate and conduct research in areas related to training and autism intervention.

Qualifications:

1) An earned Ph.D. in Special Education, Educational Psychology or related field from an accredited college/university.

2) BCBA certification.

3) Experience designing and implementing programs for individuals with autism in the public schools. 4) Experience supervising and training professionals or practicum students in clinical or classroom settings. 5) Familiarity with the process of securing and managing externally-funded projects and a track record of obtaining grant funding is preferred, but not required.

6) A focused research agenda.

Responsibilities:

1) To teach courses in the BCBA approved course sequence

2) To supervise educational professionals completing their BCBA supervised experience through the Burkhart Center.

3) To conduct empirical evaluations of the impact of the BCBA training program on both the quality of instruction of the participating educational professionals, but also on the students with autism they serve.

4) To engage in community/school-based research that furthers the College of Education emphasis on working collaboratively with partners to discover opportunities, solve problems, and create meaningful outcomes in society.

5) Service to the department, college, and university is expected.

The Burkhart Center provides a comprehensive range of services for individuals and families in a state-of-the-art facility. The building contains 4 multimedia meeting rooms, 3 clinical/research areas, 3 stand-alone research laboratory spaces, and observation booths and video/audio recording capabilities throughout the space. Burkhart Center team members take an integrative approach to their work. There are over a dozen clinical services, four funded grant projects, and multiple research groups active in the center.

Burkhart Center grants support one of the only fully inclusive programs for college students with ASD, a state-wide roll-out of Project SEARCH (a school to work transition program for individuals with disabilities), and an innovative Teacher Training Institute to prepare rural special education teachers across Texas to be expert ASD interventionists and trainers. Burkhart Center team members work with over 40 university and community partners, cutting across disciplines, and including colleagues in the School of Theatre and Dance, the College of Media and Communication, the College of Human Sciences, the College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources, Student Disability Services, and the TTU Health Sciences Center. In the community, center staff members partner with diverse organizations such as area school districts, the Texas Workforce Commission, and numerous local businesses to provide an array of services and opportunities for those served by the center.
