ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL – SPECIAL EDUCATION - GENERAL

A vacancy exists for a teacher to fulfil the role of Assistant Principal – Special Education – General at Lurnea Public School for 2017, with the possibility of an extension. This position is a full time position for 2017 with the possibility of extension into 2018.The successful applicant will commence 27 January 2017.

Lurnea Public School has a student population of 485 students, Preschool to Year 6, from diverse social and cultural backgrounds, including 29 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and 75% students from a non-English speaking background. A support unit of four classes caters for students with autism, moderate and mild intellectual disabilities as well as students with complex additional needs. The staff at Lurnea Public School comprises of experienced teachers and teachers in the early stages of their career. It is an Early Action for Success school that has a highly effective and strategic partnership with our community of schools, enabling delivery of outstanding professional learning and demonstration of innovative classroom practice. Lurnea Public School is also a Positive Behaviour for Learning school. We have a proud tradition of teaching children to be safe, respectful learners.

Specific Selection Criteria

In addition to the general selection criteria, approval to teach special education and/or experience teaching students with intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorder and complex additional learning needs.

General SelectionCriteria

1. Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice
2. Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs
3. Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams
4. Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents
5. Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning
6. Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policies.

Please note: If this position is paid at a higher rate of pay than the successful applicant’s substantive position, the incumbent will be remunerated by way of a higher duties allowance. This allowance comes with certain conditions, such as the rate of payment for leave in excess of 5 days and the rate of payment applicable for school vacations.
