ETHOS and VALUES

The government places responsibility on all school to promote ‘fundamental British values’ of:

  • democracy
  • the rule of law
  • individual liberty
  • mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs, ethnicity and sexual orientation.

Alongside these values, which we prefer to describe as ‘fundamental universal values’ the school has also agreed a set of preferred set of values that guide us in our school lives and our decision making:

  • Co-operation
  • High expectations.

We promote these values in the following ways:

  • Strong whole school ethos
  • Weekly assemblies reinforcing our ethos and key messages
  • All school policies and practices reviewed by governors for compliance with equal opportunities
  • Successful integration of students from a variety of countries into our community through links with the Language School, our EAL coordinator and language support
  • Provision for daily prayer is made available to all students
  • Strong pastoral structure with weekly ‘thought for the week’ theme. Each theme is based around personal, emotional or community issues and requires students to reflect. This explicitly promotes the understanding of different cultures and beliefs
  • Appointment of Head Boy and Head Girl and Deputies. Students take up a variety of leadership roles across the school. These include representational roles (student and school councils – democratic election to School Council) out right leadership roles (house captains, prefects) and mentoring roles (instrumental tuition, sports leadership, peer mentoring, Buddy Reading, Year 7 mentors)
  • Extensive programme of charitable events and fund raising organised and led by student body
  • Society and Environment and English Curriculum teaches students to critically evaluate world and British historical events, ideas and political ideals and to understand and respect a range of religious and non-religious viewpoints and faiths.
  • The Society and Environment curriculum explicitly teaches values, ethics, philosophy and morality in all years.
  • The Modern Foreign Languages curriculum researches cultural differences and celebrations
  • Strong Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education programme in all year groups. Including Controlled Assessment for Citizenship considering the Rights and Responsibilities of all people in society and focusing on important community issues
  • Extensive enrichment programme including visits in Britain and abroad, work with external businesses and partners, including the cooperative movement
  • Links to other schools abroad. In Languages we take part in “Business Language Champion” to strengthen business links
  • Rewarding positive and desirable behaviour through the school rewards system
  • Strong and coherent behaviour and anti-bullying policies.
  • Weekly Thought For The Week topics have included cultural differences, community cohesion and diversity
  • Students plan community and charitable events in all year groups
  • Working with Project Prevent officers in various years to ensure that students are aware of issues around extremism.
