Assistant Director of Student Involvement

DESCRIPTION OF JOB:

Assist the Office of Student Activities with the advising of night and weekend student event planning, orientation planning, supervision of student staff members, and leadership development. Serve as a link for Student Engagement and Inclusion (both the Office of Student Activities and Student Diversity and Inclusion) in coordinating and promoting a diverse variety of campus events and student leadership opportunities to promote student learning outside of the classroom.

Work with all members of the college community to create a learning environment that utilizes the Student Development learning outcomes to promote student growth. Among these outcomes are helping students to establish healthy relationships, understanding and respecting difference, engaging students to promote social change, taking responsibility for self, and determining and clarifying personal values, among others.

Responsibilities:
Programming and Leadership Development

  • In conjunction with the Student Engagement and Diversity team, set yearly programming goals for social, educational, multicultural and recreational programs
  • Based on programming goals create year-long programming plan to be executed by the Campus Activities Board (CAB) and the Student Diversity and Inclusion Ambassadors
  • Hire, train, supervise and evaluate the Campus Activities Board student staff, which consists of 10 paid student staff members
  • Assist the Office of Student Diversity and Inclusion in the hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of five Diversity and Inclusion Ambassadors
  • Create an in-depth training for CAB students and Diversity and Inclusion Ambassadors around program planning basics, inclusive practices, and program assessment
  • Develop and advise weekend and evening programming that promotes student growth, involvement in learning, engagement and inclusion in campus life
  • Work with the Office of Student Inclusion and Diversity to implement a collaborative programming model and to develop joint student programming learning outcomes
  • Develop and advise signature events, with special focus on Fall Fest/Family Weekend, Winter Frost, Spring Fest, Annual Drag Show, MLK Jr. Dream Week, Multicultural Step Show, as well as Sour Patch Series events, and monthly heritage celebration events (i.e., February Black History Month, etc.). Work in partnership with the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the Office of Student Residence and Life, and Dominican Life to form student committees for signature events
  • Actively build relationships/mentorships with students, including spending time in the office, in the Student Organizations Room, and attending student events
  • Assist in the development and planning of the Multicultural Student Organization Retreat and provide support to the Multicultural Student Organizations on campus

Orientation Programs

  • Assist Director of Student Activities with the planning of New Student Orientation, to take place directly prior to the beginning of classes in August and January
  • Lead the recruitment, selection, training, and supervision of Orientation Leadership Team (OLT), made up of two Orientation Assistants and 50 Orientation Guides and Peer Leaders
  • Coordinate the Orientation Welcome Ceremony for new students, families, faculty and staff
  • Develop and advise evening programming that promotes engagement to campus life and inclusive community building
  • Coordinate co-curricular values-based programming to connect with the yearly college value based theme (Truth, Justice, Community, Partnership, or Compassion)

Peer Mentor Program

  • Support the Peer Mentor Intern with developing, planning and marketing peer mentor program events and activities
  • Provide additional daily support, as needed, for both mentors and mentees
  • Attend Peer Mentor Program events and activities as needed
  • Maintain program feedback from all participants, as well as ensuring that all participants complete a pre and post evaluation
  • Partner with Learning Support services to connect students with academic support resources on campus

Student Engagement and Inclusion and Student Development Staff

  • Assist with the coordination of student recognition ceremonies, mainly Dominican Honors Convocation
  • Work collaboratively with the Student Engagement and Inclusion team to promote a campus culture of engaged learning
  • Serve as a member of the Student Engagement and Inclusion as well as Student Development staffs by attending meetings, retreats, planning sessions, and engaging in effective communication practices
  • Serve as a link among Student Development offices in communication and coordination of planning events and student leadership

Administrative Functions

  • Work with the Director of Student Activities to formulate and administrate the Campus Activities Board budget
  • Provide direction to the Office of Student Activities desk staff and Commuter Assistants as needed
  • Collaborate with Reservations, Facilities, Dining Services, and Technology for programming space needs
  • Oversee the Student Organization Room, including policy creation and enforcement, inventory and purchasing, cubby space requests and use by student organizations, computer usage, Wingra Closet storage, and mailbox assignments
  • Evaluate and assess programs and services on an ongoing basis. Create and share reports
  • Submits Weekly Reviews of campus events to the Student Life team, including event type, attendance, summary, and lessons learned
  • Assist in the creation of the End of Year Report with the Director of Student Activities, focusing on campus events

College Services

  • Serve as member College committees as needed
  • Participate in Commencement, College Assemblies, Admissions functions and other College activities as needed
  • Actively support Mission of Edgewood College and Student Development Staff

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Necessary Education or Work Experience:

  • Master’s degree in counseling, student affairs or other related fields focused on college student development (required).
  • Two-year professional experience in college student affairs (preferred).
  • Experience working in the areas of orientation, student involvement, diversity and inclusion, residence life, etc.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed (required).
