Assignment Overview:

The purpose of this inspirational speech assignment is to motivate your audience to engage in community development and inspire them to work towards social change, contributing to their personal transformation and empowering them with the confidence, skills and knowledge necessary to effect change in the world. Your speech should inspire the audience by appealing to noble motives and challenging them to volunteer their time and talent to support an organization or cause they love.

Learning outcomes:

1. Tell a story about how the cause and the organization you represent isimpacting the community and driving change.

2.Talk about a community action project promoted and sponsored by the organization you have chosen that the audience can support through volunteering, fundraising or through any form of pro bono work.

3. Explain how the audience can benefit by donating their time and energy working with this non-profit organization you have chosen.

4. The last segment of the inspirational speech should be devoted to call for action by championing for the cause,explaining how your audience can create positive change in their own community by spreading the word and being advocates & supporters of this cause.

  • Approach the organization to participate for volunteering or supporting their cause or representing them for fundraising or even for involving yourself for pro-bono work in a community project promoted by them.
  • Share your experience of this organization in your speech and appeal to the audience seeking advocacy and support to their cause.
  • You can use visual aids, graphics to support your speech. Avoid using notes since that may cause the audience to doubt your sincerity and conviction.

Delivery & presentation:

You can add drama and impact to your speech if you:

  • Use quotes, stories and anecdotes throughout the speech. Human-interest stories and anecdotes about overcoming adversity and achieving success attract the audience's interest and add meaning to your message.
  • Use language that unites listeners and establishes a bond between you and them, such as you and us.
  • Use vivid words that allow listeners to visualize all of the good things that will happen if they do what you say needs to be done.
  • Use action verbs to convey power.
  • Pay attention to the organization of your speech outline.(Follow sample outline format). Your presentation should be direct and urgent, showing that you really care about how your listeners react. You must prove to listeners that you are sincere and believe in your message. Be confident and forceful,and show enthusiasm and vitality. Use body language to demonstrate your conviction. Your conclusion should be emotionally powerful and dynamic. It should challenge listeners or demand that they commit to your cause, and the conclusion should dramatize the benefits of doing so. Finish with a memorable final statement.
