Assignment Sheet for Essay 3

Goals:

At the end of the process of compiling this portfolio, you will be able to:

·  write a compelling argument-driven academic analysis which considers one text in the light of another;

·  distinguish between exhibit and argument sources and use them both appropriately in your essay;

·  articulate a clear and arguable claim about your sources in the context of an introductory paragraph;

·  use effective and logical paragraphs, transitions, organization, and topic sentences to develop your argument and move back and forth between your sources;

·  use appropriate evidence (quotations) with MLA-style in-text citation and a final list of works cited to support your argument;

·  develop an appropriate and relevant academic title for your essay;

·  reflect on the process of writing this essay and articulate your strengths and weaknesses so far;

·  articulate, throughout your essay and especially in an appropriate academic conclusion, the rationale (your answer to the “so what?” question) for your claim;

·  edit and proofread your essay to avoid the most basic English-language errors use specific strategies for drafting, revision, and editing to help achieve correct English prose and effective essay coherence;

·  and reflect on your writing throughout this course, articulating how your writing has changed.

Task: For your final essay in this course, you will write an approximately 5 page synthesis of three authors’ treatments of a single theme. One of the authors must be Jhumpa Lahiri (The Namesake), but the other authors may be anyone whose works we have read together in this course. You may use the same author, same theme, and some of the same passages as you have already used in your journal entries; indeed, you may use entire paragraphs of analysis from your reading journal entries (if they are useful, relevant, and analytical) in your essay 3. You will develop your own topic for this essay in consultation with me and on the basis of our class discussions.
