  1. What is noise? Name any two types of noise and briefly describe what causes them. (2)
  2. What is Pulse Code Modulation (PCM)? Assume the maximum signal bandwidth of speech data is 4,000Hz. What is the sampling rate for converting speech into digital data using Pulse Code Modulation (PCM)? If each sample is encoded by 8 bits, what is the data rate of the encoded signal? (3)
  1. Why are the wires twisted in a twisted-pair copper wire?(1)
  1. Discuss why repeaters are needed in a communication channel. What is a key difference between an analog repeater and a digital repeater? (2)
  1. Show the signals that will be generated when the sequence 01010001 is encoded using NRZI and Differential Manchester encoding schemes. (2)

Assume that you are a network administrator of ABC University, New Delhi; which wants to implement a University-wide network to enable it to appropriately support E-learning, management information systems, video and multimedia and other developments. The University has two other campuses one in Mumbai and another in Bangalore. The University has a number of Faculties on each campus, which includes Health; Business; Engineering/Computing and Art/Design. All the faculties need to use the central IT network communication facilities at New Delhi. Each campus has 6 departments in their premises and each department has the several computers, the details of each departments and number of computers in each department are given below. Departments may be at present anywhere in the premises and if needed can be shift to other place also.

Department / Numbers of computers
Administration / 10
Accounting / 06
Faculty / 12
Student Support / 6
Laboratory / 35

The faculty and Laboratory department works seven days per week, 24x7 (twenty-four hours per day). It requires local data transmissions of data from one machine to another every time with high data rate and good quality. Weekly on Monday administrative department require real time connectivity for videoconference with other departments. Other departments also need sufficient amount of data transmission rate.

Note: Student can make necessary assumption if required.

The following should be included in the project assignment report.

  1. Table of Contents.
  2. Executive summary.
  3. Logical design: It should include network Internet/Intranet connections & ISP.
  4. Physical design: A physical map of the LAN & WAN indicating where the equipment and cables will be placed.
  5. Hardware Requirement: The number of servers & other relative hardware (routers, Hub, Gateways, switch etc) their basic specifications & information.
  6. Software Requirement: List the applications that may be used (i.e., e-mail, Windows, MS Office, Videoconferencing software if any etc).
  7. Define the architectures (i.e., client/server, peer-to-peer, mainframe, segmented, etc).
  8. Define the logical & physical topologies if more than one (i.e., bus, ring, star, etc).
  9. Define the physical media (i.e., UTP, STP, coaxial cable, fiber, etc).
  10. Define the various network connections (Hubs, repeaters, bridges, gateways, etc).
  11. Select the Network Operating System (i.e., Novell, Windows NT, UNIX, etc).
  12. Describe LAN Management (i.e., administrator, help desk, security, disaster recovery, etc). Also discuss the limitation and precautions.
