Johansen, W., Aggerholm, H. K.,Frandsen, F. (2012). Entering new territory: A study of internal crisis management andcrisis communication in organizations. Public Relations Review, 38, 270– 279.

Abstract:

In the modern dynamic environment, in which organizations must operate, exists a danger of falling into crisis. This is the important aspect of a current changing world. Company ability of dealing with it is a strong asset. The success of organization in dynamic world is indicated by the way it is able to face the fall and stand back on feet. Managers have to be prepared for such a possibility and be able to think straight and according to changing rules. This is very hard, therefore some plans of actions or managers preparation should be provided beforehand. In the paper are presented results of questionnaire comparing different approaches of dealing with crisis situations. The research showed that majority of the organizations prepare for such possibility and state that part of this preparation concerns management and communication with internal stakeholders. It’s discovered that this communication is mostly dealt with in very professional and formalized way. Results also showed that there is a strong relationship between company size and crisis management. Generally, the bigger companies are more likely to have a crisis plan. Therefore it seems that only the bigger organizations treat the crisis very seriously and provide the precautions. Other companies’ managers could adapt their attitude and also create the crisis plan as it’s important to be ready for new circumstances before the moment when they occur in order to be able to fight them.

Critical reflection:

As underlined in adaptive cycle of organizations, crisis is inseparable part of company existence. It is a very significant part of the cycle, because the crisis is the trigger of whole sequence of phases and it’s the most emotional part of it. There can appear panic among employees and also managers, who are usually responsible for finding ways out. The fear is the biggest obstacle for action. Thus managers need to be focused on organization rearrangement. Without the proper communication within the company this can be hard to achieve. In order to find a way out of the crisis there must be new way of thinking set in the organization and all of the employees must create the new flow of ideas, which should be initiated by managers with use of their plan arranged earlier.
