Topic – Assessment Week

Assessment week was a success. Thanks to Dr. Lori Ellens-Manuel and Dr. Marshall for all their hard work and effort.Because timing was of the essence, OHC did not do human diversity this semester across all disciplines. We will use course embedded assessments. We chose to use the survey that Harold Washington College created on human diversity. This will give us a lot of necessarydata that we can build on come August 2013.
The survey on diversity is about fourteen questions. We need to review it, show it to our departments, build dialogue, and decide if we are going to implement the survey next term.Other City Colleges are doing their human diversity this week.
As far as best practices go, it is best to conduct testing a minimum of eight weeks into the semester. We will never do it this way again. We will do our testing later in the semester during spring assessment cycle.
We made a good faith effort to show that we are collecting data and implementing HLC’s standards.
HLC Conference – April 7-9, 2013 - Olive-Harvey will send a number of people. If interested, please see Rachel Martin to sign up. The conference will be at Hyatt in Chicago. Keep this in mind so paperwork can be completed. Those who have never attended a conference are especially invited to attend.
General Education Outcomes. The Chair reported Provost Kojo is asking that each college in the district complete the SLO’s for the Gen Ed’s for their college. Currently, there is one Gen Ed that needs to be completed. We need assistance with the creation of SLO’s for Life Sciences. Everything else is completed.
Chair Carr will forward the committee the e-mail with feedback from the Provost. The e-mail will show the initial list of General Education Outcomes that the college created and suggestions that were made for improvement. We must make corrections so that we can submit a finalized copy of the Gen Ed’s for the college.
We need to build on course assessment and move to program and institutional assessment. We must extend our reach and proceed. Look at what is happening in our departments, programs, and institution. These three levels of assessment really need to be looked at. There is a broader picture here.
Report: - A report was due to HLC in October.
Assessment Training: There will be an assessment training hosted by The Association of Research Libraries this month at Olive-Harvey. Sharon Silverman will be in attendance, and she would also like to invite Dr. Cecilia Lopez to attend.
Newsletter: The assessment newsletter is in the finishing stages. If any members from the committee are interested in sharing anything, see Professor Carr this week.
The Vice Chair reported the District-Wide Assessment committee every third Friday of the Month. A report on meeting with the chairs and the submission of the minutes was given at that time.
Dr. Cecilia Lopez should be included when making assessment decisions. The committee would like to extend her an invitation to attend our meetings.
Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC): Dr. Watson WAC initiative should be presented at the next District-Wide Assessment meeting.
Assessment Chairs Meetings:One or two committee members are invited to attend the assessment chairs meeting. That way we can have more than one member of OHC present. If interested, please let professor Carr or Inwang know.
Assessment Coordinator Report
There will be a college wide meeting on November 30th. The objective of the meeting is to give an update to HLC to show accomplishments and actions of the school.
A report was sent in about two weeks ago, but the college has not received any feedback. Dr. Marshall sent out an e-mail informing HLC of the update meeting that is scheduled. Because faculty will be present, we are hoping HLC will give their recommendation or thoughts in time for the meeting.
Depending on budget, Dr. Marshall is hoping to buy gifts for everyone who participated in fall assessment cycle. It has not been formally announced because it has yet to be determined.
We need to decide what classes will be up for the spring 2013 assessment cycle. It might even be a good idea to have a spokesperson in each department to tell what went well and what worked for them this fall.
The 1107e and a spreadsheet created by Dr. Ellens illustrate the outcome from the data that was collected during assessment week and the fall assessment cycle 1. It has been e-mailed to the committee.
