ASPENHIGH SCHOOL

“TRICKS & TREATS” SPEECH & DEBATE INVITATIONAL

Friday, October 31 & Saturday, November 1, 2008

The Aspen community is pleased to invite you to our campus for the 2008 Aspen High School Speech and Debate Tournament.

Friday will be a very special tournament day at the AspenHigh School “Tricks & Treats” Speech & Debate Invitational. ‘Election Friday’ will begin with a ‘Caucus’ in which we will allow students to self-identify with U.S. Presidential candidates McCain and Obama and speak towards their candidates’ behalf. Please note that speeches are to be positive statements and our interactions will be conducted with the civility that we would all wish to be a trademark of U.S. political discourse. Halloween would not be complete without ghost stories and we welcome costumed contestants to compete in Storytelling and Costume competitions. NFL points would be available to all contestants in both of these forums.

Saturday features a more traditional slate of events. Extemporaneous, (alternating between foreign and domestic topics with a ‘mixed’ third round) Oratory and Impromptu Speakingevents as well as Interpretation of both Literature, splitting into Dramatic and Humorous when entries allow.

We will offer three (3) formats of debate: Policy; Public Forum and Lincoln-Douglas. The Policy division will debate the 2008-09 Policy topic, “Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase alternative energy incentives in the United States.” Public Forum contestants will debate the October topic, “Resolved: The United States should significantly increase its use of nuclear energy ” and Lincoln-Douglas debaters will use the September-October topic, “Resolved: It is morally permissible to kill one innocent person to save the lives of more innocent people.” This decision was made in an effort to get the invitation out to as many schools as possible as early as possible and the tournament begins on October 31.

Schools traveling from beyond the RoaringForkValley should take advantage of a very special rate secured with the Aspen Square Condominium Hotel, ( ). There is free, RFTA bus service between this amazing hotel and AspenHigh School.

Below is a form in which you may r.s.v.p. for this event. I hope to see you in Aspen for Halloween !
