(Dissertation writing: Topic, Method, Format and Proposal writing)

Course Description

A study of the essential elements in the development of a dissertation. Topics to be considered are:

  • dissertation requirements and approval forms
  • schedule, time management, motivation
  • research topics and problem
  • literature search, organizing and selecting references
  • formulation of a conceptual framework
  • research design (selecting a methodology and a population)
  • analyzing results
  • organization and structure
  • flow, writing style, editing, craftsmanship
  • selecting and working with an advisor and committee members

Through the facilitation of guided group interaction, it is expected that the student will have the understanding required to successfully complete a dissertation and will have developed a draft of a dissertation proposal by the end of the course.

Assignments

  • For all papers, APA (6th ed.) referencing is required. Any paper submitted which is not APA compliant will be failed and returned without being read.
  • Papers are to be in Times New Roman, double spaced and typed.
  • All reading and assignments must be completed and submitted in order to pass the course.

NOTE:

  • The following requirements must be done sequentially.
  • Since this is a core course in the program all requirements for this course must be completed before you may write Comprehensive Exams.
  • The instructor/s will be available, by appointment, to discuss any aspect of your dissertation. This may be done individually or in small groups.
  • The instructor/s will also be available at other times for informal discussion but the student should only proceed with specific directions for the dissertation if they have received approval from both instructors.

Required reading (complete the reading and submit the reading slip prior to proceeding with assignments).

A set of assignments that build on each other. They must be submitted sequentially and only after having received approval from the instructor/s to proceed to the next phase.

Assignment 1: Defining the significance of a topic (handout)

Important:

  • The topic needs to be counseling related. Pure sociological or psychological topics will not be accepted.
  • It needs to be an empirical study. Archival or theoretical work alone will not be accepted.
  • The topic needs to have a clinical (assessment or treatment) focus, or a prevention intervention focus.

Assignment 2: Dissertation topic, research questions and research problems (2 - 4 pages)

Assignment 3: Methodology, Population and Sample, Instruments, Data Analysis Procedures including your rationale for each (5 - 10 pages)

Assignment 4: Summary of your Rationale for your Dissertation Topic and Methodology (handout)

Assignment: 5: Preliminary Bibliography (including at least 50 references) and a description of how you plan to access enough of the literature to build a substantial literature review

Assignment 6: Prospectus (see AGST Guidelines)

Assignment 7: Tentative suggestions for Advisor and Committee members, Tentative Schedule (handout), and Budget

Assignment 8: Draft Proposal (including all the sections and content of a final proposal)

Presentation of Draft Proposal to a group (mock defense)

The final course requirement is to orally present and defend your approved draft proposal to a group of your classmates (at least 4), and to the instructor/s. Your classmates will submit written evaluations using an evaluation form provided.
