HPS AST meeting

1)Ashley Burke of United Way took over her role as Chairwoman, replacing Chad Moe of the Rockford Fire Department.

3)Follow up:
a)Judy reported on expo data from student survey- many students felt that there was not enough time with the expo, and Judy provided a reminder to members that the intent of the expo is to help students pick their academy
i)January 7th students will have an internal expo staffed by teachers and older students to help freshmen pick their pathways
b)Lyndi had her baby, so Hannah will fill in as secretary
c)Chad reported on mock epidemic done by freshman at Guilford. Students track the infection and pulls together math, English and science classes. Students do a lot of research and projects. Started 11/30 and will last until mid-January when they will hold a press conference. Project involves about 150 students.
i)Very successful, so Guilford will be doing a mock crime scene
4)Debbie Burns shared two success stories:
a)Kudos to Hannah Schoenberg on her recommendation to have an advocate attended an IEP Meeting. Michele from RAMP was awesome, very thorough, and patient and had very good suggestions.
b)Shared success story of mentoring program (program that identifies students who have failed 3+ classes and pairs them will staff for mentoring. Do check ins and advise students.) Debbie is working with a student and they meet once a week and work on math concepts, tests and review her grades. Also talk about her skills and self-esteem. Student is doing really well now and in showing more interested in school and is gaining confidence.

5)No teacher requests at this time
6)Discussed NSOPS (National Standards of Practice). It is what NCAC uses to review academies and provides guidelines for what they should accomplish.
a)Everyone should review/read if able and will discuss at next meeting
7)Austin invited everyone to concert at JHS on Thursday at 7:00 pm
8)Renee reported that HPS is the largest academy at Jefferson with 418 students.
a)116 students have undefined pathways (needs to be fixed)
b)98 in law and public safety
c)67 in education and child development
d)61 in performing arts
e)57 in human services
f)15 in performance production
g)4 in land and resource management
9)Next meeting will be during common planning on time on 1/5 from 8:30-9:15.
