COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER
JOB DESCRIPTION
Reporting to: The Chief Executive
Location: London
Hours: Full-Time (37½ hours per week)
Purpose: Managing communications for Arthritis Action across all Comms channels and functions
Key Responsibilities
· To implement new communications plans across the spectrum of Comms disciplines including media & PR, member and stakeholder communications, marketing, advertising, and digital & social media.
· To increase the Charity’s profile using all channels with influencers, organisations and key audiences.
· To be the Charity’s “brand guardian”, and manage/protect the Charity’s reputation.
· To support the Charity’s fundraising, services, education and public affairs activities.
· To lead on all copywriting and production of content (both online and offline), marketing materials and key publications including Annual Review, press releases, articles and statements.
· To take responsibility for all proactive and reactive PR and planning, and media & social media including media and online monitoring.
· To process, edit and review digital content (working to Arthritis Action’s organisational and web standards) whilst maintaining content to our accessibility, SEO and brand guidelines.
· To lead and co-ordinate the development of the website ensuring that it provides support to delivery of the organisation’s strategic objectives.
· To update the Arthritis Action website using content management systems (CMS) and process updates for other teams.
· To act as first point of contact for the Digital Content, dealing with general website queries and complaints via email and telephone.
· To log technical errors and help test changes to online services.
· To implement and expand social media strategy, and to act as social media administrator.
· To develop relationships with target media representatives.
· To oversee the management of a case study database.
· To ensure that staff are well briefed on key communications issues.
· To prepare and monitor the annual communications budget.
· To manage external suppliers and contractors, including the website provider.
· To lead on maintaining appropriate and consistent language and terminology across all media.
· To monitor, evaluate and report on all aspects of communications including web traffic.
· To participate in cross-functional projects, and take an active part in the Charity’s external event programme.
· To keep up to date on best practice within the charity sector generally – and to pay particular attention to changes in communications innovation, legislation and codes of practice.
· To develop effective internal and external customer relationships.
· To enhance communications with colleagues, and develop an understanding of the Charity’s work and the needs of its users.
Person Specification - Essential
· Degree level qualification or equivalent – preferably in a Communications-related subject.
· At least 8 years working in the field of Communications, and able to demonstrate knowledge of a broad range of Communications activities – media, websites, publications, marketing, social media, PR, events, etc.
· Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to write in Plain English for a range of outlets.
· Experience of developing and implementing communications strategies in line with an organisation’s vision, values and strategic objectives.
· Proven and demonstrable experience of working with a wide range of media, developing media strategies and relations, preparing press releases, etc.
· Experience of monitoring and evaluating communications.
· Wide experience of working with websites and producing content for websites.
· Search Engine Optimization analysis and Google Adwords experience.
· Proven experience of working with social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
· Strong organisational skills with excellent attention to detail.
· Computer literate with good MS Office skills, internet and web technologies.
· Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to influence across the organisation and externally.

Person Specification – Desirable
· Knowledge of website content management systems and mass e-marketing tools.
· Database experience.
· Experience of working for a Charity or not-for-profit organisation.
· Experience of managing budgets.
· Proven and demonstrable experience of editing and producing publications.
· Experience of working with e-communications, including preparing and sending E-Bulletins, supporter updates, appeals, etc.
