Kindergarten

  1. Course Description

This course is designed to introduce students to the art room. It will encourage them to express themselves through a variety of media.

  1. Course Objectives
  2. To introduce and familiarize the children with the use of the art room.
  3. To introduce and familiarize the children with the materials and tools in the art room and their safe and proper handling.
  4. To stimulate the imagination of each child and extend and deepen the child’s capacities to search out interpretation and meaning in a work of art.
  5. To assist the child to live harmoniously with other children through group activities.
  6. To study the elements of art.
  7. To provide an atmosphere conducive to a creative exploration of these elements through a variety of 2-D and 3-D projects.
  8. To incorporate an interdisciplinary approach to learning.
  9. To foster an awareness and understanding of a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  1. Major Concepts and Topics

This segment of the art curriculum fulfills the following NJCCC Standards for Visual and Performing Arts: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5

The elements of art are introduced through sequential activities.

  1. Color Theory

Color is an integral part of our lives and a major element of artistic expression. The students will explore basic color theory and relationships as they are introduced to a variety of media.

  1. Introduce primary and secondary colors.
  2. Introduce students to the emotional quality of color.
  3. Introduce students to media including watercolor, tempera paint, construction paper and crayon.
  4. Projects may include:
  5. Painting with a Palette/ Red, Yellow and Orange
  6. Painting with a Palette/ Red, Blue and Violet
  7. Painting with a Palette/ Blue, Yellow and Green
  1. Two-dimensional Art
  2. Drawing
  3. Develop disciplined seeing and sensitive motor control through constant practice.
  4. Contour line-sensitivity to a line as it creates form
  5. Solid Space-developing volume
  6. Media introduced may include pencil, crayon, pastel, oil pastel and marker.
  7. Art appreciation-references to artists and related works of art.
  8. Projects may include:
  9. O’Keeffe-Flowers, Houses, Desert, Cityscapes
  10. Matisse-Wild Beasts
  11. Painting
  12. Continued experiences in developing disciplined seeing and sensitive motor control.
  13. Media introduced may include watercolor, tempera paint and water crayons.

Texture as surface pattern occurs in nature, our environment and in many types of artwork.

  1. Media may include collage, rubbings, and sculpture

  1. Three-Dimensional Art
  2. Sculpture-demonstrate various approaches to sculpture problems
  3. Media may include clay and paper sculpture

  6. Monster Bed clay sculpture
  1. Mobiles-demonstrate various approaches to solving problems of movable sculptures
  1. Student Skill Objectives

This segment of the art curriculum fulfills the following NJCCC Standards for Visual and Performing Arts: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Identify the primary colors
  2. Identify the secondary colors
  3. Hold a drawing implement correctly
  4. Create various types of lines in order to draw a picture from their environment
  5. Create various types of lines in order to paint a picture from their environment
  6. Create solid forms through use of various media
  7. Identify basic geometric shapes
  8. Use painting supplies correctly
  9. Create a pattern
  10. Safely and properly handle scissors
  11. Use various painting materials to create a composition which will include a sense of balance or pattern
  12. Create a collage demonstrating use of texture
  13. Create a rubbing
  14. Create a 3-D form using clay
  15. Create a 3-D form using paper
  16. Create a movable sculpture
  17. Discuss a work of art (both their own and others) from their imagination
  18. Be familiar with the characteristics of works by a select group of artists
  1. Evaluation Procedures

This segment of the art curriculum fulfills the following NJCCC Standards for Visual and Performing Arts: 1.4

  1. Evaluation of success will be based upon abilities and exhibited in studio projects and ability to follow directions.
  2. Students’ progress will be on an individual basis. Instruction will be varied form whole class presentations to small group and individual demonstrations.
