How do images influence our views of the world?

How is art used to impact the views of a society?

Expressive Self-Portrait

GOAL: Develop a self-portrait based on the style of another artist that expresses the student's personality

PROCEDURE:

1. Research a famous artist (from any time period in art history) whose style you admire and would like to recreate.

2. Find as many examples of this artists work as you can. Save them into a Word document to share with me on Aspen. (This is being "handed-in".)

Answer the following and hand in with your images. You will type this up in Word and share it with me in Aspen.

a. Who is the artist you chose and what is so dynamic and expressive about their work?

b. What elements of art and principles of design are the strongest with this artist?

c. If this artist was to visit your art studio, what questions would you ask them?

d. What do you hope to gain as a result of creating a self-portrait based on this artists work?

3. Decide how you would like to represent yourself in a self-portrait that is highly dynamic and incredibly expressive. You are going for "WOW!" here. Be shocking...be bold....be daring...(however, keep it school appropriate!)

4. Create 4-5 thumbnail sketches (to be handed-in as well) of your layout. You may use photographs of yourself or rely on a mirror to render your face.

5. Decide on the media you would like to use.

6. You have a week and a half to work on this.

FINAL DRAWING REQUIREMENTS:

1. Size: between 9x12 to 18x24 inches with a 1/2" border

2. Medium: your choice

3. Self-portrait must reflect the style of the artist you chose while expressing YOUR personality

1. Share your Word document with chosen artist images on Aspen

2. Questions answered and shared on Aspen
