Course Description

Art III Pre AP sculpture is designated for highly motivated students who are committed to continuing their three-dimensional artistic pursuits. The course concentrates on developing technical skills and artistic appreciation of successful three-dimensional artwork. Studio projects will be tied to discussion of art historical topics and/or uses of art in modern societies. Lessons will include studio work, class discussions, written responses to artwork and homework in which students are required to participate. Students will use a variety of methods including assemblage, casting, carving, and modeling along with a wide variety of materials. In addition to the above information students taking advanced sculpture will develop a concentration, a thematic body of work, while expanding on their knowledge of materials and processes. Students will work independently, relying on critical thinking, problem solving and exploration to create their own expressive work. This is a highly rigorous course designedonly for advanced art students who have a vested interest in creating three dimensional art.

Grading

In order to be successful in this class students must meet the criteria given for each assignment, be prepared to question and critique, their own work as well as the works of other artists, and approach each art project with an open mind and positive attitude. Creativity, craftsmanship, personal effort, critical thinking, sketchbooks and homework assignments are all included in the grading process.

40% = quizzes, sketchbook, homework, class-critiques, participation

60% = tests, projects, self-critiques

Late work and make up work

Students are expected to work productively and meet each assignments requirement by its due date. Ample time is given in class to complete each assignment. It is the students’ responsibility to complete missed work within SHS student handbook guidelines. Tutorials will be offered in the mornings before school on Thursday mornings from 8:15-9:00. Tuesday and Thursday during 3rd period and 4th period lunches.

Classroom Safety

We will be using tools and materials that require care and caution. Students who follow the studio safety guidelines will participate in art activities utilizing the following tools and supplies:

  • X-acto knives and utility knives
  • Pliers, hammers, saws and drills.
  • Gouges, carving tools and clay tools
  • Files, sandpaper, soldering iron
  • Adhesives (hot glue, rubber cement, epoxy, super glue)
  • Chemicals and aerosols (paint, plaster, glazes, spray paint, ink)

Technology

Students will be expected to maintain an online portfolio. Canvas will be used as a central point to go to for all assignments, due dates, information and in submitting some projects. There is also a remind number students are requested to sign up for along with the parents in order to keep up to date on deadlines. Supplies

This is an advance course, evidence of research and study is required. A sketchbook is required, and the student is expected to bring it to class every day.This year’s sculpture supply kit islisted below can be purchased by the student in class for $20.CASH only!!! No checks will be accepted. You may also choose to buy the supplies separately. ***There are limited amounts of kits available!!! Consumable supplies may need to be replaced thru-out the year.

  • 1-25lbs low fire white clay (if you only want clay it $10 must be purchased in the beginning of year to get that price or its included in the kit)
  • Set of 6 paint brushes (10/0 & 4 round, 6 & 14 Flats, ¼ angle, 2 Oval)
  • 1-Bienfang Note-Sketch Spiral Binding Horizontal Sketchbook, 60 lb, 5-1/2 X 8-1/2 in, 64 Sheets
  • 1-Black Fine Point Sharpie
  • 1- Adult Scissors
  • 1-7 in Paint Palette with 10 wells

Sketchbook/Journal

This is an advance course, evidence of research and study is required. A sketchbook is required, and you are expected to bring it to class everyday. It will be used to document ideas, observations, discoveries, you’ve noted about your art work, the work of fellow students or other artist work. This tool will serve as progress reports and will supplement your proposal. Writing and sketching can be as interesting as u want it to be. Think of it as a documentation of your personal experience this year. You are expected to journal in it…approach the writing as you wouldyour artwork.

Proposal

In order to create a substantial body of work in a variety of materials, you must first determine a subject or area of focus. Like a concentration or thesis, you will be choosing a theme to explore over the course of the semester. During this course you will create your artist statement;thiswill include ideas of what direction your artwork might take. This will also include materials you would like to explore, intended scale of work, and subject matter.

Projects/ Art work

A minimum of 3 pieces are required each 6 weeks. Size of work will be taken into account and you may be required to create more depending on size. It will be up to you to manage your time appropriately. You will be responsible of photographing each piece for your portfolio and submitting them to the teacher each 6 weeks.

Studio Expectations

  • Be on time and be prepared with materials (SKETCHBOOK!!!!!) and read agenda.
  • Be committed and bring a positive attitude.
  • Participate, take pride in your work, and focus on quality.
  • Be responsible and use all tools and materials appropriately.
  • Be respectful of your peers, their work, the teacher and the studio.
  • Each student is responsible for making up work missed due to absence (open studio Tuesdays)
  • Please follow all school rules and procedures.

  • Perform only those activities assigned to me and approved by teacher.
  • Protect my eyes, face, hands and body by wearing proper clothing and using protective equipment.
  • Carry out good housekeeping.
  • NEVER work alone in the studio.
  • Handle art supplies and equipment only when authorized by teacher.
  • NEVER enter or work in supply area unless instructed to do so.
  • Use supplies materials and equipment as the teacher instructs.
  • NEVER abuse materials and equipment in the studio.

  • Full range of values (where appropriate)
  • Definitive use of the ELEMENTS OF ART
  • Good design (clear use of the PRINCIPLES OF ORGANIZATION)
  • Definite clarity of media

  • Clear color scheme or harmony
  • Direct observation as well as creative and expressive thought
  • Demonstration of higher learning skills
  • NO copied work

Student Art Room Safety Contract

  • Protect my eyes, face, hands, and body by wearing proper clothing and using protective equipment provided by my school. (Art supplies/equipment could damage clothing; therefore, bringing a painting shirt for protection may be desired.)
