IYHA Mite Jamboree – Format and Rules

Arrival and Pre-Game

1. Teams will dress in locker rooms. Check the locker room assignment board at the rink for locker room numbers and/or ask at the information table.

2. Take time before your game to rate your available players and make a B-Line (bottom 4 players or 5 players) and an A-Line (top 4 or 5 players). B-Line will start the game. If total number of players on a team is an odd number, the B-Line should have more players.

3. Decide one coach to facilitate (referee) the game and one coach to control the bench area during the game. It is okay to talk to your players during play.

4. Plan a 3 minute warm-up that includes skating, stickhandling, passing and shooting for your team. This warm-up only happens before the first game of your 3-game rotation.

5. Learn the 3-game rotation for your team before hitting the ice. Pinnies will be available for teams with the same colors.

6. Parents and siblings who are not coaches or a designated bench coach should not be in the players’ bench areas.

Game Format

Third Ice Games

Barriers will be set up on each blue line dividing the ice into three sections.

1. Games will be 14-18 minutes depending on the remaining time available. Teams will play 3 consecutive games against different opponents.

2. Horn will go off every 2 minutes, but the clock doesn't stop. A face-off occurs at the start of every shift, but not after goals. Shifts are 90 seconds of actual play.

3. We will use goaltenders. The nets should be placed 6' from the sideboards. If they move, please slide them back into place.

4. Play 4v4 or 3v3 depending on each teams numbers. Do your best to have only two groups. It is ok to have one group of 4 and one group of 3. Do not play with 5 players on the ice.

Half Ice Games

Barriers will be set up along the red line. Four nets will be on the ice, Two at the traditional creases and two about 8 feet from the center ice dividers. Sets of 3 or 4 dividers will be stacked behind the nets to keep shots that miss the net from entering the other half.

  1. Games will be 25-27 minutes in length based on the time available. Teams will play two consecutive games against different opponents.

2. Horn will go off every 2 minutes, but the clock doesn't stop. A face-off occurs at the start of every shift, but not after goals. Shifts are 90 seconds of actual play.

3. Half ice games will be 4v4 (skaters) plus goalies

Game Play

1. Coaches will manage the game. Talk to your players when they foul. Checking will not be tolerated. Sit them down if they are reckless and causing safety issues. Always correct players who are recklessly leaving their feet and crashing into people; be sure to do this during their shift right when it happens, not when the shift is over. The bench coach should reinforce the need for safety with the player after the shift.

2. After warm-ups place the starting line-up (B-Line) on the ice and the rest of the players in the designated bench area. You may have to share the same door and bench area as your opponent.

●End zone games: Both teams share the door and bench area closest to their game.

●Neutral zone games: Each team can use the bench area opposite the end zone teams.

3. When changing lines from the benches, teach your team to first let the bench players onto the ice before anyone tries to get off the ice. Also when players come off the ice, have them move all the way down the bench and not stop at the door.

4. Puck is dropped to start a new shift, but not after goals.

5. After a goal is scored, the scoring team must retreat and tag-up on their half of the ice before engaging in the play again. The team scored upon must quickly dig the puck out of the net and mount an attack while the other team is retreating.

After Game Plan

1. After the final horn, all players and coaches should go on the ice and meet at their respective nets.

2. Teams will shake hands after each game.

3. Teams will rotate together as a group to the area for their next game. Coaches should have their players follow them, rather than let them race around on their own.

4. When yourgame rotation is complete, go back to designated dressing rooms (dressing areas) and talk to your team about the experience. Be positive and supportive of their efforts. Return all pinnies to the penalty box area.
