Pier Street revitalisation

The revitalisation of Pier Street in Altona is set to continue, with the final stage of works starting 21 June and continuing until October. The works will focus on the area between Blyth and Queen Streets, and will include new paving, street furniture, lighting improvements, new trees and designated pedestrian barriers. Shops, restaurants and cafes will remain open for business during this time, though sections of Pier Street may be closed to parking or traffic at some times. Make sure you continue to visit your favourite businesses during the works.

Buloke expo at Louis Joel

Did you know that the City of Hobsons Bay has a special friendship and alliance with the Shire of Buloke in the WimmeraMallee region, which includes 10 townships including Donald, Charlton, Sealake? To learn more, visit the Discover Buloke Expo at Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre from Saturday 20 June until Sunday 5 July. Men’s shed reopening soon

After extensive repairs, the Hobsons Bay Community Workshop at the Truganina Reserve will soon be open again for men’s business – but women are welcome too. The workshop is home to the Hobsons Bay Men’s Shed, Altona City Theatre Group, Williamstown Musical Theatre Company and the Truganina Explosives Reserve Preservation Society. The Hobsons Bay Men’s Shed has about 250 members and offers a range of activities and events, including woodwork, computer repairs, social groups, motoring and photography groups.

Become a Family Day Care educator

Hobsons Bay City Council is currently recruiting child care educators who wish to work from home providing high quality education and care for children aged from birth to 13 years. Applicants need a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care or equivalent and a passion for working with children and families. For more information contact Council on 9932 1000.

Community Grants applications now open

Every year, Council gives financial assistance through its annual Community Grants Program to local community organisations and groups.Project applications for 2016 for the initial grant round can be submitted until 9 August 2015. These grants go towards some excellent projects in our community. Through funds from a community grant, the Altona RSL recently gave governance training to local sports groups including hockey and lacrosse clubs and little nippers.

Strand

Protecting the coastline at Hatt Reserve

The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) in partnership with Hobsons Bay City Council will be building a 150m rock revetment wall at Hatt Reserve, Williamstown as a defence against coastal erosion. A community information session will be held on 25 June from 6.30pm at The Rocks Function Centre. Works will start in early July 2015 and will take approximately 10 weeks to complete. Sections of the reserve and walking path will be closed during construction hours (7am to 5pm, Mon to Fri), however the adjacent reserve will be open. Visit hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au for details.

Newport Youth Library Seniors Project

To mark the start of the construction at Newport Youth Library Seniors facility, Mayor Colleen Gates and Strand Ward Councillor Peter Hemphill turned the first sod at the construction site this month. They were joined by Strand Ward Councillors Deputy Mayor Cr Paul Morgan and Cr Angela Altair along with other Councillors and members of the community. Once complete, the facility will include a library, space for youth services including consulting rooms and a music recording studio, as well as maternal and child health services and space for seniors and other community groups.

More than a training facility – new nets and courts at Bryan MartynOval, Newport

Five cricket practice nets and a netball court with a half basketball courtand ring are now being installed at Bryan Martyn Oval. Theseimprovements will not only increase the training capacity of the NewportDigman Cricket Club and Newport Power Junior Netball Club but will offer casual sporting opportunities for visitors to the reserve.

Williamstown Elm Renewal Program

As part of the Williamstown Elm Renewal Program, 10 Elm trees were recently removed in various locations across Williamstown, and bluestone protection bays installed until the Elms can be replanted by September. Seeing a majestic Elm removed can be distressing for some in the community, however these trees were assessed as posing potentially serious risks to people and property. To manage risks associated with ailing mature trees, Council has an ongoing renewal program.For further information, please contact Council on 9932 1000.

Cohealth comes to the Laverton Community Hub

The new Cohealth Service at the Laverton Community Hub launched this month. In addition to GP services, Cohealth will provide pathology, physiotherapy and optometry services with services commencing on Monday 29 June.This new medical centre will complement existing services offered at the Laverton Community Hub, which includes a commercial kitchen, cafe, crisis services, youth services, social groups, the Brotherhood of St Laurence, exercise and dance groups and much more.

Laverton Community Hub Open Day

Everyone is invited to visit the Laverton Community Hub for an Open Day this Saturday 20 June from 10am to 2pm. It’s a chance for the community to meet all the groups, organisations and individuals that operate out of the Hub. There will be lots of free activities including face and henna painting, an animal farm, African drumming, Zumba dance, Tai Chi, performances by Wangal United Aboriginal Cultural Dance and Out of the Woods.

Bruce Comben Reserve to see local rugby across the line

Works have started on the Bruce Comben Reserve Pavilion Redevelopment, which is currently home to the Seabrook Cricket Club and Westside Touch Association.These clubs operate during the summer season leaving the ground vacant for the rest of the year, and the expansion of the pavilion will allow for a local rugby club to use the facility in the winter season.
