Course Objectives

ARH 1000, Face-to-face format

This section of ARH 1000 will be delivered in a face-to-face format on SPC’s Tarpon Springs campus, although portions of it will be uploaded into the MyCourses platform.To succeed in this course, you need to:

  • Get a copy of the Gateways to Arttextbook, 2nd edition. You have to have the InQuizitive access code to be able to take the quizzes in this course! See the links for the eBook and for InQuizitive in MyCourses for more information and listen about the various options on the first day of class. Your most economical option is to make your purchase directly via the link within MyCourses.
  • Attend class regularly. Pay attention & keep your cell phones off!
  • Have access to a computer with a high-speedinternet connection, since the image files are large and take a long time to download on dial-up connections. If you do not have this access, there are computers available on all SPC campuses for your use. Please check the schedules at each campus for hours.
  • Have enough computer knowledge to access and navigate the MyCourses website,prepare keyboarded documents, and use email. You need to be able to view streaming videos, open Word documents and PowerPoint presentations, and navigate through the MyCourses system to see the course content and to be able to take quizzes and submit information to dropboxes.
  • Have time throughout the semester for traditional homework assignments such as readings, study questions, a museum visit, an architectural scavenger hunt,and quiz & exam preparation.

Criteria Performance Standard:

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.

Understanding Art (ARH 1000) Textbook
Gateways to Artby Debra J. DeWitte, Ralph M. Larmann, and M. Kathryn Shields. We are using the 2nd edition of this book. ISBN: 978-0-500-98157-3

  • A notebookif you take hard copy notes, or a Word file if you take notes on your computer. If you want to do well in this class, you should take notes on your reading and treat this as a serious college-level class. Just skimming the text and then taking the quizzes will likely yield a low grade.
  • You need to have Microsoft Word installed to fulfill these assignments properly. If you do not have it, you are entitled to a download of Microsoft Office, which includes Word, Excel, and other useful products as an SPC student. If you need help downloading that from your MySPC account, please contact the Helpdesk. Their number can be found within your MyCourses class.
  • You need to be able to do basic photo-editing, so you can crop and turn around photos the proper way before uploading them into a Word document for your Architectural Scavenger Hunt discussion post assignment. If you need help with that, please ask the free tutors in the Learning Commons in the library for assistance in plenty of time before the due date for this assignment.

Quizzes and Final Exam

Your quizzes will be taken via the InQuizitive platform provided by the Norton publisher, so you will have to have a valid access code to be able to take them. As they comprise 55% of your overall grade, it is important that you have this access code. Within MyCourses in the “InQuizitive” folder, you may click on the link and either activate a code you already have (bundled with a textbook purchase) or you may purchase an eBook for $50 that includes the access code. After purchasing the eBook within the InQuizitive link inside the MyCourses class, you will get an email from the Norton Publisher offering you the opportunity to purchase a 3-hole punched paper version of the book for only an additional $15. That means you can get the paper book, the eBook and the access code for a grand total of $65, which is considerably cheaper than if you purchase your book via Barnes & Noble or Amazon. The stand-alone access code via that link is only $20, according to the Norton textbook representative.

There are 12 quizzes in this class and they will make up 55 % of your final grade. In your grade book, they are averaged together in one line that says InQuizitive in the grade report. The grades will change as you take more of the quizzes. You can see your individual quiz grades when you’re logged in to InQuizitive, but not within the MyCourses grade report. The quizzes are already open, so you may work ahead. Each quiz has a minimum number of questions you have to answer, but if you are not satisfied with your grade at that point, you may keep working on it, ostensibly until you earn 100%. That way, you truly have the best chance to earn the grade you want to have in this class via the quizzes just by working longer, if necessary.

Your final exam will consist of objective questions, based on the material found in the chapters that is covered in the Gatewaystextbook. The questions are formatted as multiple-choice and may include images or just text. The quizzes and the final exam will be taken online via the MyCourses platform and require a good high-speed internet connection. If you do not have a reliable one, then take the exam and your quizzes in one of the computer labs on campus.

On the final exam, which is taken directly within MyCourses, pay special attention to learning thetitle,artist(where applicable),medium,period, and identifying theartistic significanceof works of art, as some of the test questions will be based on these criteria. You will not need to learn the dates for the works, although being aware of what century they belong will be helpful to your general understanding of the material. The emphasis will be on images that are shown inthe PowerPoint slide shows in MyCourses,as well as in the textbook. You may consult your textbook as you take quizzes and the exam.

The final exam in this class is cumulative and you have 75 minutes to complete 52 questions. Two of the questions are identified as extra credit questions: if you get these questions wrong, they will not be counted against you. Again, you may use your Gateways textbook to confirm your answers as you take this exam online. There will be an in-class review during the last lecture to prepare you for the final exam.

You only have ONE attempt to take the final exam in this class!No test grades will be dropped in this course!

MAGIC MAKE-UP DAY

Magic Make-Up Day happens once a term, right before final exam week. You will know about it from a class announcement, a News Item, and an email that I will send to let you know that this is the day. On that day, if you log in to MyCourses, you can make up any quizzes by going to the InQuizitive folder (and only quizzes – not discussion posts or other graded assignments) without it penalizing your grade.

This has several helpful implications: if you were sick or traveling and missed a quiz, then you have an opportunity to make them up on Magic Make-Up Day.Do not ask me when Magic Make-Up Day is: I want to reward those of you who pay attention, and do not ask me to give another, alternate make-up quiz day. It will not happen!

If you miss a quiz entirely, and do not make it up on Magic Make-Up Day, then you will earn a “0” on it. 55 percent of your final grade comprised of your quizzes.

You will be evaluated based upon your performance on the following items. Your final exam is worth 100 points, as are the quizzes. Percentages will be awarded for each examination as outlined below:

Whenever communicating with me in assignments or via email, I would appreciate it if you avail yourself of your computer’s spell checker and send me grammatically correct messages, since I’m not impressed by the recent trend toward ignoring all laws of English grammar and capitalization in modern communications.

Museum Field Trips and Essay

Our community offers several excellent opportunities for experiencing the visual arts in local museums.In this course, the college requests you to visit theLeepa-Rattner Museum of Arton the Tarpon Springs campus of SPC and complete a writing assignmentrelated to your visit.Admission is free for SPC students. We will be visiting the museum as a class during regular lecture time at some point during the term. The instructor will announce in class when this “in-house” field trip will take place. That way, you get a professional tour of the artworks in the permanent collection of the museum and a demonstration of the Feldman Method of Critical Analysis to analyze a work of art.

You must submit your museum paper in Word format in the proper drop box, with your photos of your favorite and least favorite works of art clearly inserted into the document and identified, and described in the paragraphs accompanying the works. You also need to include a photo of yourself inside the museum to prove you were there this semester. Please check the detailed formatting instructions for the paper in MyCourses and the rubric for this assignment in the proper MyCourses folder. You can learn about the Feldman Methodology from the in-house field trip and from the two videos uploaded in the “Feldman Method of Critical Analysis” folder in MyCourses. Please make sure to watch both of them, since not utilizing this methodology correctly will mean that you will be docked points on your essay!

Besides visiting the Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art during class time one day, I also intend to offer a field trip to Sacred Heart Church in Tampa and that same afternoon, continue to the Tampa Museum of Art to see the Photorealism Art and the Animals in Ancient Art shows there. The first portion at the cathedral will have a professional docent, while I will guide the tour at the museum myself. The tentative date for this combination field trip is Friday, September 22, time TBA. I still need to confirm the details, so listen in class for further announcements. Because this is a two-part field trip, you may receive extra credit for each leg of this field trip you attend. So, if you just go to Sacred Heart or to the Tampa Museum, you earn +5 points extra credit toward your museum essay, but if you go on both field trips, you can have +10 points added to your Museum Essay grade.

However, you must to go to a museum during the semester in which you are taking this class and do the Museum Visit Paper, whether you can go on a field trip with your instructor or whether you do the museum visit on your own. If you do go on the two-hour guided tours with the instructor, you will earn + 5 points extra credit on the Museum Essay grade -- that way those of you who make the effort to come with me at a given time will be rewarded for it. This instructor will strive to grade the Museum Visit Essays in a timely manner. Please realize that doing an excellent job reviewing this assignment takes some effort, so please be patient, as the grades are submitted manually as I get to them. This term I have three courses that have this same assignment due at the same time. It takes me about half an hour to properly evaluate each essay and at the beginning of this semester, I have 126 students signed up. That means I have more than one full work week of nothing but grading papers, so you can imagine that it will be some time before you get your grade, right?

Architectural Scavenger Hunt Discussion

Ideally, this is 3-hour activity is a two-person project, so meet up with a classmate and determine where locally you may want to get together to look for various architectural details.It must be done during this term, so digging up old vacation photos will not do!
If you cannot meet up with a classmate, maybe one of your friends or family members will tag along with you and help you find as many examples of the architectural details as possible in the attached Word document form in the instructions for the discussion. In addition, you need to have digital photos of yourself in front of each architectural feature that you are including to prove you were there in person. If you are alone, just take a selfie, but it looks better if you can ask a by-passer to snap your photo rather than having a close-up of just part of your face with the architectural details, so keep the aesthetics in mind. You need to post your filled-out .pdf file with your findings inserted with explanations about them in the captions. I have uploaded some samples to get you started. This may be one of the most fun activities in the course!
